Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses manufactured using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Youtube Helix Mattress

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Buyers are asked to complete a questionnaire that asks for their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress variants; each individual variant provides a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them perfect for side sleepers. While mattresses that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfortable on models with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 lbs or more often favor the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with different preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier people. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Youtube Helix Mattress

Construction Youtube Helix Mattress

All nine of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be quite similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending on the foams used in order to attain more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the beds have all of the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 unique versions (and hopefully have a mattress for everyone). Youtube Helix Mattress

Underneath, I concisely talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. However, if you want something more lavish, you can choose to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change material for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll find a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you’re probably going to encounter some great body contouring. While it might seem strange for a supposedly medium firmness bed to incorporate a memory foam layer, it’s crucial to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it gives quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you will discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress is made up of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they are also likely to give extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll uncover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t really affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their varying firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will differ widely depending on the version you select. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and thus very popular. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with more options.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer feels soft and produces some top quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and create an overall firmer structure. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your back in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Many side sleepers should feel totally comfy on the Midnight, but, if you’re needing a bit less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with all of their weight on a tinier area. Those who are smaller than average or those in the market for a lot of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their primary position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Last, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or partners who weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. If you or your partner are significantly larger than average, Helix has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that’s created to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with different body types or tastes can also select a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of those models feel right, you may always have a look at the four other mattresses in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is noticeable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this will be crucial for all sleepers, those who sleep with a partner may find it especially interesting as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Youtube Helix Mattress

Based on my observation, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it contains, as well as the individually wrapped coils that help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper concerned that movement from the opposite side of the bed will wake you, then you shouldn’t have much concern with this mattress. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a brand-new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the individually-wrapped coils and find great support. This combo will interest a vast range of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the pocketed coils prevent the mattress from compressing a lot beyond that. I feel quite secure seated on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their newly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Partners who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Lying down, I feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe that the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically include. Helix Sleep is no different. You create the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it is sent to your home. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, Helix Sleep does its best to locate a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. Youtube Helix Mattress

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers an awesome 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it comes with a few limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you must be the first owner of the Helix to use the warranty, and you need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to use a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4” apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to show an indentation of 1 inch or more, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s advised to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be certain that you wash using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.
