Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced with polyfoam base layers. Purple 3 Vs Helix

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Purchasers are asked to fill out a survey that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress variants; each individual variant offers a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for side sleepers. While those with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfortable on models with balanced support, while people who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them suitable for couples with differing tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier people. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a wide range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Purple 3 Vs Helix

Construction Purple 3 Vs Helix

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be fairly similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness based on the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The four unique foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 distinct versions (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Purple 3 Vs Helix

Underneath, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you would like something more luxurious, you can choose to swap out the standard cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll discover a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, meaning you’re probably going to experience some great body shaping. Even though it may seem odd for a supposedly medium firm mattress to make use of a memory foam comfort layer, it’s crucial to remember that the existence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it produces quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you will discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Since these coils are individually wrapped, they are also likely to give additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you will find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us talk about their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will differ widely depending on which version you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and thus very popular. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with additional choices.

Laying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam layer is soft and generates some quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials in the mattress work to control this and create an overall firmer structure. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or those who prefer a firmer bed, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Most side sleepers should feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, however, if you are wanting less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a tinier area. People who are lighter than average or people in the market for lots of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their back.

Lastly, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers around 350 pounds or partners who weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. In the event you or your spouse are substantially larger than average, the company has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that is created to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with different types of bodies or tastes may also pick a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of these models feel right, you can always have a look at the four other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be crucial for all sleepers, those who sleep with a partner may find it especially interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you will be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Purple 3 Vs Helix

According to my research, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it contains, as well as the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that movement from the other side of the bed will bother you, you should not have a lot of concern with this mattress. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter some immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the pocketed coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of individuals, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the pocketed coils prevent the mattress from collapsing too much . I feel quite secure sitting on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Partners who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll off or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I believe that the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You customize the mattress that is meant for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it is delivered to your door. From the minute you click to order the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it for free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. In fact, Helix finds a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Purple 3 Vs Helix

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an awesome 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you should be the first owner of the Helix to use the warranty, and you need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to use a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4” apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix begins to show an indentation of 1” or more, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it’s advised to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure that you clean using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
