Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Nectar Sleep Helix

Helix Sleep offers full mattress customization. Customers are requested to fill out a questionnaire that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress options; each individual model offers a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Nectar Sleep Helix

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While mattresses with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are ideal for all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while individuals that weigh 130 lbs or more tend to favor the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both of these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with differing preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier individuals. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a large range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate movement well, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Nectar Sleep Helix

Construction Nectar Sleep Helix

All nine of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be rather similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness depending on the foams used in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 unique variants (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Nectar Sleep Helix

Underneath, I briefly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you want something more lavish, you can choose to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change material to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll find a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which means you are likely to experience some satisfying body shaping. Even though it may seem strange for a supposedly medium firmness bed to make use of a memory foam comfort layer, it’s crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the pocketed coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this segment of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are wrapped individually, they are also likely to give additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section does not affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us chat about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on which version you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be quite versatile and thus very popular. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with more choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and generates some quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials in the Midnight work to control this and make an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your back in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or those who want a firmer bed, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Many side sleepers should feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you are needing a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with most their weight on a smaller area. Those who are lighter than average or those looking for lots of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their primary position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.

Lastly, Helix Sleep recommends Helix for sleepers around 350 lbs or couples who weigh up to 250 pounds each. In the event you or your partner are significantly bigger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with differing body types or tastes can also select a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of those models sound quite right, you can always have a look at the 4 other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the line).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be crucial for many people, those who doze with a spouse may find it especially intriguing as it will show just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Nectar Sleep Helix

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that movement from the other side of the mattress will wake you, you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this mattress. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they are sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter a little immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to find the individually-wrapped coils and feel great support. This combination will appeal to a vast range of individuals, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit near the edge of the bed, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from compressing too much beyond that. I feel very secured seated on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There may be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfy and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will roll off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix is not any different. You customize the mattress that is meant for you, place your order, and in 2 weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it for free, and receive a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, the company does its best to locate a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. Nectar Sleep Helix

Helix Warranty

Helix offers a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with a few limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most guarantees ). Of course, you should be the original owner of the mattress to make use of the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4” apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1 inch or more, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleaning, it is advised to use cold water with gentle dish soap to clean any dirt or stains. Make certain that you wash using gentle circular movements, rather than rubbing.
