Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Mattress Helix Review

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Buyers are requested to complete a questionnaire that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective model gives a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Mattress Helix Review

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While those with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfy on variants with balanced support, while individuals that weigh 130 lbs or more often favor the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them suitable for couples with different preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier individuals. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a wide assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and produce less noise than the normal hybrid. Mattress Helix Review

Construction Mattress Helix Review

All 9 of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be fairly similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness depending upon the foams used in order to attain more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the variants have all the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine different models (and hopefully have a model for everybody). Mattress Helix Review

Below, I briefly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you want something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change fabric for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll encounter a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you’re likely to experience some great body shaping. Even though it may seem odd for a supposedly medium firmness bed to feature a memory foam layer, it is crucial to remember that the existence of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress consists of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Since the coils are individually wrapped, they are also likely to encourage extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you’ll find a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment doesn’t really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on which model you choose. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and therefore very popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with more choices.

Laying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and generates some high quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and make an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or people who prefer a firmer bed, there are 2 more models for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Most side sleepers will feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you may want to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with most of their weight on a tinier region. People who are smaller than average or people looking for lots of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their main position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Last, the manufacturer suggests Helix for sleepers around 350 lbs or partners who weigh up to 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are significantly bigger than average, the company has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that is constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with different types of bodies or preferences can also pick a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of these models seem quite right, you can always have a look at the four other models in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s detectable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be significant for many people, those who doze with a spouse may find it especially intriguing as it’ll show just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Mattress Helix Review

According to my research, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that movement from the other side of the mattress will bother you, then you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a new mattress, most men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter a little immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to reach the pocketed coils and find great support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of individuals, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel quite secure sitting on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfortable and safe. Partners who want more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I could get near the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall off or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I believe that the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically include. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it is delivered to your door. From the minute you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it free, and receive a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. In fact, Helix finds a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it is recycled instead. Mattress Helix Review

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it comes with some limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you must be the original owner of the Helix to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to have a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4” apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1” or longer, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleanup, it’s advised to use cold water with gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure to wash using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
