Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. How To Unpack Helix Mattress

Helix Sleep allows full mattress customization. Customers are urged to fill out a survey that discusses their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress variants; each individual model offers a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for side sleepers. While hybrids that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel most comfortable on models with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 lbs or more tend to prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them suitable for couples with different preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier people. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the average hybrid. How To Unpack Helix Mattress

Construction How To Unpack Helix Mattress

All 9 of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be quite similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density depending on the foams utilized in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The four unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the beds have all the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine unique models (and hopefully have a mattress for everyone). How To Unpack Helix Mattress

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you prefer something more luxurious, you can elect to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change fabric to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you are probably going to experience some gratifying body contouring. Even though it may seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness bed to feature a memory foam layer, it is important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it produces quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you will discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the pocketed coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the structure, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to allow additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment does not really affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will differ widely depending on the variant you choose. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and thus exceptionally popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with more choices.

Lying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and generates some top quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to control this and make an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or people who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Many side sleepers should feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting a bit less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you may decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most their weight on a smaller region. Those who are smaller than average or those looking for plenty of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their primary position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.

Lastly, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or partners that weigh up to 250 pounds each. In the event you or your partner are significantly larger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that is created to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with different types of bodies or preferences can also pick a dual comfort model that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of those models feel right, you could always check out the 4 other variants in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is detectable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be crucial for all sleepers, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. How To Unpack Helix Mattress

According to my research, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the individually wrapped coils that help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that motion from the opposite side of the bed will wake you, you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When buying a brand-new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they will feel like they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you may experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to reach the individually-wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the coils prevent the mattress from compressing too much . I feel very secure sitting on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their newly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfy and safe. Partners who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I feel like I can get near the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall off or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I believe that the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually include. Helix Sleep is no different. You customize the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it is sent to your door. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it free, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, Helix does its best to find a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. How To Unpack Helix Mattress

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you must be the original owner of the Helix to make use of the warranty, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to use a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleanup, it is suggested to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be certain that you clean using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.
