Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Weighted Blanket

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Buyers are asked to fill out a survey that discusses their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress models; each individual model gives a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While hybrids with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfortable on models with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 lbs or more often favor the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both of these variants have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with differing tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier people. This variant has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a large range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Weighted Blanket

Construction Helix Weighted Blanket

All nine of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be rather similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending upon the foams used in order to attain more/less support and more/less firmness. The four unique foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the variants have all the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 unique versions (and supposedly have a mattress for everyone). Helix Weighted Blanket

Below, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you want something more luxurious, you can opt to swap out the standard cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change fabric to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll find a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, meaning you’re probably going to experience some satisfying body contouring. While it might seem odd for a purportedly medium firm bed to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it’s crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you will find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since the coils are wrapped individually, they are also going to encourage additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section does not affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on which variant you pick out. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and therefore best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with additional options.

Laying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam layer is soft and produces some quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials within the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer structure. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For larger buyers or those who prefer a firmer bed, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Many side sleepers will feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you are needing a bit less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you may want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a smaller area. Those who are lighter than average or people in the market for plenty of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers should feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their primary position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 pounds or partners who weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are significantly larger than average, Helix has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s created to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with differing body types or tastes may also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these options feel quite right, you may always have a look at the four other beds in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the line).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this will be significant for all people, those who sleep with a partner may find it particularly interesting as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you will be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Weighted Blanket

According to my research, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils that help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that movement from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, you should not have much concern with this mattress. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While purchasing a new mattress, most people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they are sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

While you are likely to encounter a little immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you will hit the individually-wrapped coils and experience great support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the coils prevent the mattress from collapsing a lot . I feel very secured seated on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their freshly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfy and safe. Couples who need more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I will roll over or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically include. Helix Sleep is no different. You customize the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it’s delivered to your home. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it free, and get a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. In fact, Helix Sleep finds a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Weighted Blanket

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it has some limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you should be the original owner of the Helix to use the warranty, and you need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you will need to have a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4” apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix starts to show an indentation of 1” or longer, something that usually happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleaning, it’s advised to use cold water with gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure to wash using gentle circular motions, rather than rubbing.
