Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Vs Bed In A Box

Helix Sleep offers full mattress customization. Purchasers are asked to fill out a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress models; each respective model gives a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Vs Bed In A Box

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While mattresses that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfortable on variants with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 lbs or more tend to favor the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both of these variants have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them suitable for couples with differing preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier individuals. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Vs Bed In A Box

Construction Helix Vs Bed In A Box

All 9 of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be fairly similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness depending upon the foams used in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the beds have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 unique versions (and hopefully have a model for everybody). Helix Vs Bed In A Box

Below, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you prefer something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change material for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will find a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you’re probably going to experience some great body shaping. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness mattress to incorporate a memory foam layer, it’s crucial to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you will find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this segment of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they are also going to give extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the variant you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with additional options.

Laying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and generates some high quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to counteract this and make an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or those who prefer a firmer bed, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Majority of side sleepers should feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, but, if you are wanting less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most their weight on a tinier region. Those who are smaller than average or those in the market for lots of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their main position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their backbone.

Lastly, the manufacturer suggests Helix for sleepers up to 350 pounds or couples who weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are significantly larger than average, the company has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that is made to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with differing body types or tastes can also select a dual comfort option that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of these models feel quite right, you could always have a look at the four other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be significant for many sleepers, those who sleep with a partner may find it particularly interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Vs Bed In A Box

According to my research, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that motion from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of individuals would like to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you’re likely to experience a little immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the individually-wrapped coils and feel great support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of individuals, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam compress as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the pocketed coils prevent the mattress from compressing too much beyond that. I feel very secure seated on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their freshly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfortable and safe. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall over or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I believe the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually include. Helix is not any different. You customize the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it is sent to your home. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it free, and receive a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. In fact, Helix finds a local place to donate it. If there is no way the company can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Vs Bed In A Box

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has a few limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the first owner of the Helix to make use of the warranty, and you need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4” apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to show an indentation of 1” or more, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleaning, it’s suggested to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Be certain that you wash using gentle circular movements, instead of rubbing.
