Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Vs Bear Hybrid
Helix Sleep allows full mattress customization. Buyers are asked to complete a survey that asks for their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress variants; each individual variant gives a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:
- Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
- Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
- Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
- Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
- Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
- Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for those who sleep on their side. While hybrids with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel most comfy on variants with balanced support, while people who weigh 130 lbs or more often favor the variants with extra support.
Helix Sleep also markets two variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them great for couples with differing tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.
My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a large range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Vs Bear Hybrid

Construction Helix Vs Bear Hybrid
All 9 of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be rather similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.
Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending upon the foams used in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 distinct models (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Helix Vs Bear Hybrid
Below, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.
Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you want something more lavish, you can elect to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change material for heat regulation.
Comfort Layer – On top, you will encounter a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, meaning you are likely to encounter some satisfying body contouring. Even though it may seem odd for a supposedly medium firmness bed to feature a memory foam layer, it is important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it generates quite a firm feeling.
Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and set a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the pocketed coils underneath.
Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress is made up of this segment of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the structure, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Because the coils are wrapped individually, they’re also going to allow extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.
Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll discover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.
Firmness and Support
After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their different feels and firmness levels.
The firmness of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the version you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with more choices.
Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and produces some quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and make an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also assist with re-positioning.
For those who sleep on their back, there’s enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your back in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or those who prefer a firmer bed, there are two more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.
Majority of side sleepers will feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.
Side sleepers typically need to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with all their weight on a tinier area. People who are lighter than average or people in the market for plenty of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher models.
Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their back.
Lastly, the manufacturer suggests Helix for sleepers around 350 pounds or couples that weigh up to 250 pounds each. If you or your spouse are significantly bigger than average, the company has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that’s constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.
Couples with differing body types or preferences may also pick a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.
Keep in mind that if neither of these options feel right, you can always have a look at the four other mattresses in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress of the bunch).
Now, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be significant for all buyers, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly intriguing as it will show just how bothered you will be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Vs Bear Hybrid
According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it contains, as well as the individually wrapped coils that help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that movement from the opposite side of the bed will wake you, you should not have much concern with this mattress. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.
While purchasing a brand-new mattress, most individuals wish to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.
While you may experience a little immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through those layers, you will hit the individually-wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.
Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from compressing too much . I feel very secured sitting on the bed.
In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfy and secure. Couples who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.
Lying down, I also feel like I could get near the edge of the bed without feeling like I’ll roll off or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I believe the Helix has great edge support.
100 Night Sleep Trial
Among the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually include. Helix is not any different. You customize the mattress that’s intended for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it is delivered to your home. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it for free, and receive a complete refund.
Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, Helix finds a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Vs Bear Hybrid
Helix Sleep offers a generous 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it comes with some limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most warranties). Of course, you must be the original owner of the mattress to use the guarantee, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.
As long as you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4” apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!
If your Helix begins to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?
Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.
For regular cleanup, it’s suggested to use cool water with gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure that you clean using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.
