Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Video

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Purchasers are requested to fill out a survey that asks for their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other options. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress options; each respective model offers a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them perfect for side sleepers. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfortable on variants with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them ideal for couples with different tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement well, and produce less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Video

Construction Helix Video

All nine of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be rather similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density depending on the foams used in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The four unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the models have all of the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine distinct mattresses (and supposedly have a mattress for everybody). Helix Video

Below, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you prefer something more lavish, you can opt to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change material for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you’re likely to encounter some great body shaping. While it might seem odd for a purportedly medium firmness mattress to incorporate a memory foam layer, it is important to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it produces quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you will discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress is made up of this section of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they are also likely to allow extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you will uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer does not really affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on which version you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and thus very popular. If you have more specific preferences, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with more options.

Laying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and generates some quality body contouring, while the other materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and make an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Many side sleepers will feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, but, if you’re needing less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you may want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most their weight on a tinier region. Those who are lighter than average or those looking for a lot of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their primary position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.

Last, Helix Sleep suggests Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or couples who weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are significantly larger than average, the company has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that is created to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with differing types of bodies or preferences may also select a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of those models sound quite right, you may always check out the four other variants in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be crucial for all sleepers, those who sleep with a partner may find it particularly interesting as it will show just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Video

According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it contains, as well as the pocketed coils which help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that motion from the other side of the mattress will wake you, then you shouldn’t have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When purchasing a brand-new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you are likely to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, when you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the pocketed coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the coils prevent the mattress from collapsing a lot . I feel quite secure sitting on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their freshly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfy and secure. Partners who want more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Lying down, I feel like I could get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall over or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually include. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it is delivered to your home. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it free, and receive a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. In fact, the company finds a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Video

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers a generous 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it has some limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you must be the original owner of the Helix to make use of the warranty, and you will need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to use a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4” apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress begins to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleanup, it is suggested to use cold water with gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure that you clean using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
