Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses made using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Twin

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Buyers are asked to complete a survey that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress variants; each individual option offers a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Twin

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them ideal for side sleepers. While those that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfortable on variants with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 lbs or more tend to favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with different tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a wide assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Twin

Construction Helix Twin

All nine of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be rather similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness based upon the foams utilized in order to attain more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 different foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine different variants (and hopefully have a mattress for everybody). Helix Twin

Underneath, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you want something more amped up, you can choose to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will discover a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you are probably going to experience some gratifying body shaping. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness mattress to make use of a memory foam layer, it is important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the structure, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Since the coils are wrapped individually, they’re also going to give extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you’ll discover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This segment doesn’t really affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us chat about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will vary widely depending on the model you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer is soft and generates some high quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lumbar while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or people who prefer a firmer mattress, there are two more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Most side sleepers should feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you may want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with all of their weight on a tinier region. People who are smaller than average or those looking for a lot of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers will feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Finally, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or couples that weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your partner are substantially larger than average, Helix has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that is made to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with different body types or tastes may also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these options sound right, you may always have a look at the 4 other models in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this will be crucial for all people, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Twin

According to my research, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the individually wrapped coils that help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that motion from the other side of the bed will wake you, you should not have much concern with this mattress. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a new mattress, the majority of individuals wish to know whether they’ll feel like they are sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

While you are likely to experience a little immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll reach the individually-wrapped coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide assortment of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the coils stop the mattress from collapsing too much . I feel very secured seated on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There may be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Couples who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall over or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think that the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You customize the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and in 2 weeks, it is delivered to your home. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it for free, and get a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. In fact, Helix locates a local place to donate it. If there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Twin

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers an amazing 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with a few limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you must be the first owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you will need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to have a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4” apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s advised to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure to wash using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.

Final Thoughts Helix Twin
