Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Too Firm
Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Buyers are requested to complete a survey that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress options; each respective model gives a unique combination of firmness and support:
- Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
- Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
- Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
- Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
- Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
- Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While mattresses that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfortable on models with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the variants with additional support.
Helix Sleep also markets 2 mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them suitable for couples with different tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier people. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.
My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Too Firm

Construction Helix Too Firm
All 9 of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be fairly similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.
Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based upon the foams used in order to achieve more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the mattresses have all the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 different variants (and hopefully have a model for everybody). Helix Too Firm
Below, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.
Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you want something more luxurious, you can opt to swap out the normal cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change material to regulate heat.
Comfort Layer – On top, you will find a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you’re likely to experience some gratifying body contouring. While it might seem odd for a purportedly medium firm mattress to feature a memory foam layer, it’s crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it gives quite a firm feeling.
Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you will find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the pocketed coils below.
Support Layer – The majority of the mattress is made up of this section of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the structure, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to allow extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.
Base Layer – Last, you will discover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This segment does not affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to react.
Firmness and Support
After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us talk about their different firmness levels and feels.
The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on the model you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to provide you with more options.
Laying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam layer is soft and generates some high quality body shaping, while the other materials within the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer structure. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.
For back sleepers, there’s just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or people who want a firmer mattress, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.
Majority of side sleepers should feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you are wanting a bit less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you may decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.
Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all their weight on a smaller region. Those who are lighter than average or people looking for plenty of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher variants.
Stomach sleepers will feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.
Lastly, Helix Sleep recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 pounds or couples that weigh up to 250 lbs each. In the event you or your partner are substantially larger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s made to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.
Couples with differing body types or preferences can also pick a dual comfort model that pairs Firm with Plush.
Bear in mind that if none of those options seem quite right, you may always have a look at the 4 other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).
Now, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be crucial for many sleepers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it particularly intriguing as it’ll show just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Too Firm
According to my research, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that movement from the opposite side of the mattress will bother you, then you shouldn’t have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.
While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of people would like to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.
While you may experience a little immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, when you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the individually-wrapped coils and experience great support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.
While I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot . I feel quite secured seated on the bed.
In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Couples who want more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.
Laying down, I also feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall over or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.
100 Night Sleep Trial
One of the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix Sleep is not any different. You customize the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it is sent to your door. From the moment you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not what you wanted, you can return it free, and get a complete refund.
If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, Helix does its best to locate a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Too Firm
The Helix Mattress includes an amazing 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the original owner of the Helix to make use of the warranty, and you will need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.
As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you need to use a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4” apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!
If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?
Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.
For regular cleanup, it’s advised to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Be certain that you clean using soft circular motions, instead of rubbing.
