Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Sleep Video

Helix Sleep offers full mattress customization. Purchasers are requested to fill out a survey that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other options. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective option provides a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for side sleepers. While mattresses that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfortable on models with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them great for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement well, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Sleep Video

Construction Helix Sleep Video

All nine of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be quite similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness depending on the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less firmness and more/less support. The four different foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the mattresses have all the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 different mattresses (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Helix Sleep Video

Underneath, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. However, if you would like something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the normal cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change material to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll discover a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, which means you’re probably going to encounter some great body contouring. Even though it may seem strange for a supposedly medium firmness bed to incorporate a memory foam layer, it is crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it produces quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and create a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the pocketed coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this section of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Since these coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to encourage additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t really affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on the model you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and thus exceptionally popular. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with more options.

Laying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer is soft and produces some quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your back in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or people who want a firmer bed, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Majority of side sleepers should feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you are wanting a bit less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with most their weight on a smaller area. Those who are smaller than average or people in the market for lots of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Last, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 pounds or couples who weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. In the event you or your partner are significantly bigger than average, Helix has also created a bed called the Nightfall that is constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with different types of bodies or tastes can also select a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these options seem quite right, you could always have a look at the 4 other variants in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be crucial for many buyers, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it will show just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Sleep Video

According to my research, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils which help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper concerned that movement from the opposite side of the mattress will bother you, you should not have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a brand-new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they’ll feel as though they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you are likely to experience a little immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the individually-wrapped coils and experience great support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from compressing a lot . I feel very secured sitting on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfy and safe. Partners who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will roll off or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I think that the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically include. Helix Sleep is not any different. You create the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it is sent to your home. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it free of charge, and get a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. In fact, Helix does its best to find a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Sleep Video

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with some limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the warranty, and you need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4” apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to have an indentation of 1 inch or more, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it is advised to use cool water with gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure to wash using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.
