Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Helix Sleep Quiz

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Customers are urged to fill out a survey that asks for their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress models; each individual option provides a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep Quiz

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for side sleepers. While those with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 lbs or more tend to prefer the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets two variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both of these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with different tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier people. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a large range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Sleep Quiz

Construction Helix Sleep Quiz

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be rather similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness depending on the foams used in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 different models (and hopefully have a mattress for everybody). Helix Sleep Quiz

Underneath, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you want something more amped up, you can choose to swap out the normal cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change fabric for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you are likely to experience some gratifying body shaping. Even though it may seem odd for a purportedly medium firmness mattress to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it is important to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress is made up of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the structure, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because the coils are individually wrapped, they’re also going to allow extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t really affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on the variant you choose. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which will be very versatile and therefore very popular. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep is happy to provide you with additional choices.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer feels soft and produces some top quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to control this and make an overall firmer composition. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or those who prefer a firmer mattress, there are two more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Most side sleepers will feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you’re needing less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a tinier region. Those who are lighter than average or those in the market for a lot of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their main position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, Helix Sleep recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or partners who weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are substantially bigger than average, Helix has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that is built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with differing body types or preferences can also select a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of those options sound quite right, you can always have a look at the four other beds in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s detectable from one side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be important for all people, those who doze with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you will be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Sleep Quiz

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the individually wrapped coils that help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that movement from the opposite side of the bed will bother you, you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When purchasing a brand-new mattress, most individuals would like to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you’re likely to experience a little immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, when you sink through these layers, you’ll reach the individually-wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of individuals, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the pocketed coils prevent the mattress from compressing too much beyond that. I feel very secure sitting on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There can be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfy and secure. Partners who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall over or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You customize the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it is sent to your home. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it free, and receive a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. Actually, Helix does its best to find a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Sleep Quiz

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers a generous 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it has some limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you must be the original owner of the mattress to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1” or more, something that usually happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is suggested to use cool water along gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure to wash using soft circular motions, instead of rubbing.
