Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses manufactured using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Helix Sleep Mattresses

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Purchasers are asked to complete a survey that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress variants; each respective variant provides a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep Mattresses

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them perfect for side sleepers. While mattresses that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfy on models with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them suitable for couples with differing tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier people. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide variety of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Sleep Mattresses

Construction Helix Sleep Mattresses

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be quite similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density depending on the foams utilized in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The four unique foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all of the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 different mattresses (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Sleep Mattresses

Below, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you prefer something more lavish, you can choose to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change material to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll encounter a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are likely to encounter some great body shaping. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness bed to make use of a memory foam comfort layer, it is important to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you will discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the structure, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Since the coils are wrapped individually, they’re also likely to allow extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you will uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the model you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which is going to be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with more choices.

Laying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and produces some top quality body shaping, while the other materials within the Midnight work to counteract this and create an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are two more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Majority of side sleepers will feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you are needing less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you may decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with most of their weight on a tinier area. Those who are lighter than average or people looking for a lot of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their primary position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, the manufacturer suggests Helix for sleepers around 350 pounds or partners who weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. In the event you or your partner are substantially larger than average, the company has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that is built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with different body types or preferences may also select a dual comfort model that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of those models sound quite right, you could always check out the 4 other variants in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s detectable from one side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be significant for many people, those who sleep with a partner may find it especially interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Sleep Mattresses

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the pocketed coils that help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that movement from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, then you shouldn’t have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter a little immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the pocketed coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of individuals, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the coils stop the mattress from collapsing too much . I feel very secured seated on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There can be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Couples who want more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Lying down, I feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall off or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically include. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it is sent to your door. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you have 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it for free, and get a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, Helix Sleep locates a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Sleep Mattresses

Helix Warranty

Helix offers an amazing 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it comes with a few limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the guarantee, and you will need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you need to use a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress begins to show an indentation of 1” or more, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it’s suggested to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure to clean using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.
