Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Queen

Helix Sleep gives you full mattress customization. Buyers are requested to complete a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective variant gives a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Queen

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While those that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfortable on models with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 pounds or more often prefer the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with different preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier people. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a large variety of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and produce less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Queen

Construction Helix Queen

All nine of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be rather similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based upon the foams used in order to attain more/less firmness and more/less support. The four unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine different versions (and hopefully have a model for everybody). Helix Queen

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some great breathability. However, if you want something more lavish, you can choose to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change fabric to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, which means you’re probably going to experience some gratifying body contouring. Even though it may seem odd for a purportedly medium firmness bed to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it is important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress is made up of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are wrapped individually, they are also going to encourage additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you will find a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section does not really affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will vary widely depending on which version you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and therefore exceptionally popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Laying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and produces some top quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger buyers or people who want a firmer mattress, there are two more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Most side sleepers should feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you are wanting a bit less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you might want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all of their weight on a smaller region. Those who are smaller than average or those in the market for lots of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers should feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Lastly, the manufacturer suggests Helix for sleepers up to 350 pounds or partners who weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your spouse are substantially bigger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that is built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with differing body types or preferences may also select a dual comfort option that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these options feel quite right, you could always have a look at the four other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress in the line).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is noticeable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this will be significant for all people, those who sleep with a partner may find it especially interesting as it will show just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Queen

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that movement from the other side of the bed will bother you, you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a brand-new mattress, most individuals wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the individually-wrapped coils and feel great support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of individuals, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot . I feel quite secure seated on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There may be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I feel like I could get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I will roll off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix is not any different. You create the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the minute you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it free, and get a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. In fact, Helix Sleep does its best to locate a local place to donate it. If there’s no way the company can find a way to donate your returned mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Queen

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers an amazing 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it comes with a few limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Of course, you must be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the warranty, and you need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you need to use a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4” apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress starts to have an indentation of 1 inch or more, something that usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleanup, it is suggested to use cold water with gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Be certain that you wash using soft circular movements, instead of rubbing.
