Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses made using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Psychology & Educational Services

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Purchasers are requested to fill out a questionnaire that asks for their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other options. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress variants; each respective variant provides a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While those with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are ideal for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfortable on variants with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 lbs or more tend to prefer the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both of these variants have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them suitable for couples with different preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement well, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Psychology & Educational Services

Construction Helix Psychology & Educational Services

All 9 of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be rather similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending upon the foams utilized in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 different foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 unique variants (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Psychology & Educational Services

Below, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some great breathability. However, if you prefer something more lavish, you can opt to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change material for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will encounter a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are likely to encounter some gratifying body contouring. While it might seem strange for a supposedly medium firmness mattress to make use of a memory foam layer, it is crucial to remember that the existence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you will find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress consists of this section of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the structure, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because the coils are wrapped individually, they’re also likely to encourage extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you will uncover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This segment does not affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on the variant you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and therefore best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with additional options.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer is soft and produces some top quality body shaping, while the other materials in the Midnight work to control this and make an overall firmer structure. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or those who want a firmer bed, there are two more models for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Most side sleepers should feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, however, if you are wanting less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with all of their weight on a smaller area. People who are lighter than average or people looking for lots of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their back.

Lastly, Helix Sleep suggests Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or partners that weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your spouse are significantly larger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that is constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with different types of bodies or tastes may also select a dual comfort option that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of these models sound right, you may always have a look at the four other variants in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is noticeable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be significant for all sleepers, those who doze with a partner may find it especially intriguing as it will show just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Psychology & Educational Services

According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper concerned that motion from the other side of the bed will wake you, you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a new mattress, most individuals wish to know whether they will feel like they are sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you may experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you will reach the individually-wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the bed, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from compressing too much beyond that. I feel quite secure sitting on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their newly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and secure. Couples who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll over or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I believe the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually include. Helix is not any different. You create the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it is delivered to your home. From the minute you click to order the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it for free, and get a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, Helix Sleep finds a local place to donate it. If there’s no way the company can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Psychology & Educational Services

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an awesome 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it has limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most guarantees ). Of course, you must be the original owner of the mattress to make use of the warranty, and you need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to show an indentation of 1” or longer, something that usually happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s suggested to use cool water along gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure to wash using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
