Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Picture

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Buyers are requested to complete a survey that asks for their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective variant offers a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for side sleepers. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel most comfy on models with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 pounds or more often prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them great for couples with different tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier people. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Picture

Construction Helix Picture

All nine of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be quite similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based on the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 unique foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine unique versions (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Picture

Underneath, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you want something more amped up, you can choose to swap out the normal cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change fabric to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will discover a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you’re probably going to experience some great body contouring. Even though it may seem odd for a supposedly medium firm mattress to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it’s important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it produces quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the memory foam and set a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this segment of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Because these coils are wrapped individually, they’re also likely to give extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This segment doesn’t really affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on which model you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to provide you with additional choices.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam layer is soft and produces some quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials in the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s just enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or people who want a firmer bed, there are two more models for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Most side sleepers will feel totally comfy on the Midnight, but, if you are wanting less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all their weight on a smaller area. People who are smaller than average or people in the market for plenty of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.

Finally, the manufacturer suggests Helix for sleepers around 350 pounds or partners who weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. In the event you or your spouse are substantially larger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that is made to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with different types of bodies or preferences may also select a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these options feel quite right, you can always have a look at the four other beds in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be important for many buyers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially intriguing as it will illuminate just how bothered you will be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Picture

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it contains, as well as the individually wrapped coils which help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that motion from the opposite side of the bed will bother you, you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this mattress. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When buying a brand-new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you may encounter a little immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the individually-wrapped coils and experience amazing support. This combination will appeal to a vast range of individuals, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot . I feel very secured sitting on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There may be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and secure. Partners who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall off or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I believe the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually include. Helix Sleep is no different. You create the mattress that is meant for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it is delivered to your home. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not what you wanted, you can return it for free of charge, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. Actually, the company finds a local place to donate it. If there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Picture

Helix Warranty

Helix offers an awesome 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has a few limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you must be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the guarantee, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress starts to have an indentation of 1” or more, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it is suggested to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure to wash using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
