Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Helix Microplush Mattress Pad

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Purchasers are requested to complete a survey that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress variants; each respective option provides a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them ideal for side sleepers. While those with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are ideal for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them suitable for couples with different tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier individuals. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a wide range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Microplush Mattress Pad

Construction Helix Microplush Mattress Pad

All nine of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be fairly similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness depending upon the foams used in order to attain more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all of the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 different versions (and hopefully have a model for everybody). Helix Microplush Mattress Pad

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some great breathability. However, if you prefer something more luxurious, you can choose to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change material for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will find a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are likely to encounter some great body shaping. Even though it may seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness mattress to feature a memory foam layer, it’s crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this segment of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the structure, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Because the coils are wrapped individually, they’re also likely to give additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer does not affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on the model you choose. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and therefore very popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep is happy to provide you with more options.

Laying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer is soft and produces some top quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the mattress work to counteract this and make an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For larger buyers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are 2 more models for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Many side sleepers will feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you are needing a bit less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with all of their weight on a smaller area. People who are lighter than average or people in the market for a lot of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers will feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their primary position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 pounds or couples who weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. If you or your partner are substantially bigger than average, the company has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that is built to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with differing body types or preferences may also pick a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of those models seem right, you could always have a look at the 4 other models in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s detectable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be important for all sleepers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you will be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Microplush Mattress Pad

According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils that help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that movement from the opposite side of the mattress will bother you, you shouldn’t have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a new mattress, most men and women would like to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you are going to experience some immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to hit the pocketed coils and find fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot beyond that. I feel quite secure sitting on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their newly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There may be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and secure. Partners who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall over or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think that the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually include. Helix Mattress is no different. You customize the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it free, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, the company locates a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Microplush Mattress Pad

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with some limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the original owner of the mattress to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you need to use a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress starts to have an indentation of 1” or longer, something that generally happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleanup, it’s advised to use cold water with gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure to clean using soft circular motions, rather than rubbing.
