Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Twin 36X84

Helix Sleep offers full mattress customization. Buyers are requested to fill out a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress models; each individual model gives a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them perfect for side sleepers. While hybrids with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfy on variants with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 lbs or more tend to favor the variants with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both these models have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with differing tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a wide variety of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Mattress Twin 36X84

Construction Helix Mattress Twin 36X84

All nine of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be quite similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending upon the foams used in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine different mattresses (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Helix Mattress Twin 36X84

Underneath, I concisely discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some great breathability. However, if you would like something more lavish, you can opt to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change material to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll discover a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you’re likely to experience some satisfying body contouring. While it might seem strange for a supposedly medium firm mattress to make use of a memory foam comfort layer, it is important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the memory foam and create a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the pocketed coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Since the coils are individually wrapped, they’re also going to allow additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This segment doesn’t affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on which version you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which will be very versatile and therefore best-selling. If you have more specific preferences, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam layer is soft and produces some high quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials in the Midnight work to control this and make an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s just enough good comfort material in the Helix Midnight to conform to your lower spine while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or people who prefer a firmer mattress, there are two more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Most side sleepers will feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you’re wanting less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with most their weight on a tinier area. People who are lighter than average or people looking for lots of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers will feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their back.

Last, Helix Sleep suggests Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or partners that weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are substantially larger than average, the company has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that’s created to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with different types of bodies or preferences may also select a dual comfort option that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of these models sound right, you can always have a look at the four other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be important for all sleepers, those who sleep with a partner may find it especially interesting as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Twin 36X84

According to my research, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it contains, as well as the pocketed coils that help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that movement from the other side of the mattress will wake you, then you shouldn’t have much concern with this mattress. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a new mattress, most men and women want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, when you sink through those layers, you are going to reach the individually-wrapped coils and find amazing support. This combo will interest a wide range of individuals, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam compress as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from compressing a lot beyond that. I feel quite secured sitting on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There may be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfy and safe. Partners who want more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Lying down, I feel like I could get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall off or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I believe the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically include. Helix Mattress is not any different. You customize the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it’s sent to your home. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it for free, and get a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. In fact, Helix Sleep finds a local place to donate it. If there’s no way the company can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Mattress Twin 36X84

Helix Warranty

Helix offers an awesome 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it has some limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you must be the first owner of the Helix to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you need to have a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix begins to show an indentation of 1” or longer, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleanup, it’s suggested to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Be sure to wash using gentle circular movements, instead of rubbing.
