Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Try In Store

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Buyers are requested to complete a questionnaire that asks for their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress models; each respective variant provides a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for side sleepers. While hybrids that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel most comfortable on models with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with differing preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier people. This variant has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a large assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement well, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Mattress Try In Store

Construction Helix Mattress Try In Store

All 9 of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be fairly similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density based on the foams utilized in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 different foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the mattresses have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine unique mattresses (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Mattress Try In Store

Underneath, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you prefer something more lavish, you can choose to swap out the normal cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change fabric to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll encounter a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you’re probably going to experience some satisfying body contouring. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firm bed to feature a memory foam comfort layer, it’s important to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it produces quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the construction, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Since the coils are wrapped individually, they are also likely to allow additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you will uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will differ widely depending on which variant you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and thus very popular. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with more choices.

Lying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and generates some high quality body contouring, while the other materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and make an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your back in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or those who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Many side sleepers will feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you are wanting less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a tinier area. Those who are smaller than average or people looking for lots of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers should feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their main position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, the manufacturer suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 lbs or couples who weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are significantly bigger than average, Helix has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that’s made to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with different types of bodies or preferences may also select a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of these models feel quite right, you could always have a look at the four other beds in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this will be significant for all buyers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it will show just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Try In Store

According to my research, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils that help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that movement from the opposite side of the mattress will bother you, you shouldn’t have much concern with this hybrid. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re likely to experience a little immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the individually-wrapped coils and find fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the coils stop the mattress from collapsing too much . I feel quite secure seated on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their newly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfortable and secure. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Laying down, I feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll over or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think that the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually come with. Helix Mattress is not any different. You create the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it’s sent to your home. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it for free, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, the company does its best to locate a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Mattress Try In Store

Helix Warranty

Helix offers an awesome 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has some limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the first owner of the mattress to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4” apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix begins to have an indentation of 1” or more, something that usually happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleanup, it’s advised to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Be certain to wash using soft circular motions, instead of rubbing.
