Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses made with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Toxicity Score

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Purchasers are asked to fill out a survey that asks for their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress variants; each individual model offers a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for side sleepers. While hybrids with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfy on models with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 lbs or more often prefer the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Toxicity Score

Construction Helix Mattress Toxicity Score

All 9 of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be rather similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness based upon the foams utilized in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The four different foams used within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine different variants (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Helix Mattress Toxicity Score

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you prefer something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the normal cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change material for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will encounter a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are likely to experience some great body shaping. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firm mattress to incorporate a memory foam layer, it is crucial to remember that the presence of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it gives quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you will find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this segment of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the structure, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they are also going to allow extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you’ll discover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This segment does not really affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on the variant you pick out. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which is going to be quite versatile and therefore best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep is happy to provide you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer feels soft and produces some high quality body contouring, while the other materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is just enough good comfort material in the Helix Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger buyers or people who prefer a firmer bed, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Most side sleepers should feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you are wanting a bit less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you might want to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with most their weight on a smaller area. People who are smaller than average or those in the market for a lot of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers will feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their main position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their backbone.

Lastly, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 pounds or couples that weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. In the event you or your partner are substantially larger than average, the company has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with differing types of bodies or preferences can also pick a dual comfort model that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these options feel quite right, you may always check out the four other mattresses in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress in the line).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be crucial for many people, those who doze with a partner may find it especially interesting as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Toxicity Score

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils which help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that movement from the opposite side of the bed will bother you, you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this mattress. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While purchasing a brand-new mattress, the majority of individuals would like to know whether they will feel as though they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you may encounter a little immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, when you sink through these layers, you’ll hit the pocketed coils and experience great support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of individuals, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the coils stop the mattress from compressing a lot beyond that. I feel quite secured seated on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfy and secure. Couples who want more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I will roll over or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I believe the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically include. Helix Sleep is not any different. You customize the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it is sent to your door. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not what you wanted, you can return it for free, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, Helix Sleep locates a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Mattress Toxicity Score

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with a few limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you should be the first owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you need to have a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4” apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress begins to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleanup, it’s suggested to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure that you wash using gentle circular motions, rather than rubbing.
