Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses made with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Topper

Helix Sleep gives you full mattress customization. Buyers are requested to complete a questionnaire that asks for their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress options; each respective option offers a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for those who sleep on their side. While those with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these variants have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them great for couples with differing preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Topper

Construction Helix Mattress Topper

All nine of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be fairly similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness based on the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the variants have all the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine different versions (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Helix Mattress Topper

Below, I concisely discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you prefer something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change fabric for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll encounter a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are probably going to experience some gratifying body shaping. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firm bed to incorporate a memory foam layer, it is important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the structure, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Since these coils are wrapped individually, they’re also likely to allow extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on which variant you select. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with more options.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and produces some top quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s just enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For larger buyers or people who prefer a firmer mattress, there are two more models for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Most side sleepers will feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you may want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with most their weight on a smaller region. Those who are lighter than average or those looking for lots of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Finally, the manufacturer suggests Helix for sleepers up to 350 pounds or partners that weigh up to 250 lbs each. In the event you or your partner are substantially bigger than average, Helix has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that is created to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with differing body types or preferences can also select a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of those models sound quite right, you can always check out the four other beds in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the line).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be important for many buyers, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it will illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Topper

According to my research, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it contains, as well as the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper concerned that movement from the other side of the bed will bother you, then you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this mattress. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When buying a brand-new mattress, most people would like to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

While you may experience a little immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the pocketed coils and feel fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from compressing a lot beyond that. I feel quite secure sitting on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There can be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfy and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll over or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I believe the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically include. Helix Mattress is no different. You customize the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it’s sent to your door. From the moment you click to buy the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it for free, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. Actually, Helix Sleep does its best to find a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your returned mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Mattress Topper

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you must be the first owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress starts to have an indentation of 1” or more, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s suggested to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure that you clean using gentle circular movements, instead of rubbing.

Final Thoughts Helix Mattress Topper

If you’re searching for a mattress and are not quite sure what feel that you need, Helix’s quiz and Color Match system may be the secret to finding your best sleep with little hassle. Their awesome system, which is based on expert opinions and AI, was designed to better their client’s sleep by providing a better match. Helix Mattress Topper

The features of the Helix were thoughtfully constructed to deliver choices whether you were looking for a mattress that keeps cool all night, in the event that you wanted one to cradle your curves with a thick comfort system, or both! The pocketed coil unit should offer great edge support and motion transfer is minimal with their individually-wrapped construction.
