Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Helix Sleep offers full mattress customization. Customers are asked to fill out a questionnaire that asks for their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress models; each individual variant provides a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them ideal for those who sleep on their side. While hybrids that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are great for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfy on variants with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more often prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them suitable for couples with different tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier people. This mattress has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Construction Helix Mattress Review Consumer Reports

All nine of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be rather similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density based upon the foams used in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The four different foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the mattresses have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine unique versions (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Underneath, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you prefer something more lavish, you can elect to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change material to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, meaning you’re likely to encounter some satisfying body contouring. While it might seem odd for a purportedly medium firm bed to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it’s crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it produces quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the memory foam and set a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this segment of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since the coils are wrapped individually, they are also going to give additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you’ll discover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This section does not affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on the model you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which will be very versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with more options.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer is soft and generates some high quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials in the mattress work to control this and make an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger buyers or those who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more models for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Many side sleepers should feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you are needing less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with all of their weight on a smaller region. People who are smaller than average or those in the market for a lot of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Finally, Helix Sleep recommends Helix for sleepers around 350 pounds or couples who weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your spouse are substantially bigger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s made to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with different body types or preferences can also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of those models sound right, you may always check out the four other models in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this will be important for many buyers, those who doze with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the pocketed coils that help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper afraid that motion from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, you should not have much concern with this mattress. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a brand-new mattress, most individuals wish to know whether they’ll feel like they are sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you are likely to encounter a little immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through these layers, you’ll find the pocketed coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of individuals, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot beyond that. I feel very secured sitting on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Partners who want more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall off or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I believe that the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You customize the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it is delivered to your home. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it for free of charge, and get a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. Actually, the company locates a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Mattress Review Consumer Reports

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an awesome 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the Helix to use the warranty, and you need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4” apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to have an indentation of 1” or more, something that usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is suggested to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Be certain to clean using gentle circular motions, instead of rubbing.
