Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses manufactured with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Review Amazon

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Buyers are urged to fill out a questionnaire that asks for their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress options; each respective option provides a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While those that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfy on variants with balanced support, while people who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with different tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier people. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a wide range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Review Amazon

Construction Helix Mattress Review Amazon

All 9 of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be quite similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending on the foams used in order to achieve more/less firmness and more/less support. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the variants have all the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine different versions (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Helix Mattress Review Amazon

Below, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you want something more luxurious, you can elect to swap out the normal cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will find a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which means you are likely to encounter some gratifying body contouring. While it might seem odd for a supposedly medium firmness bed to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it is important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it produces quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are wrapped individually, they’re also going to allow extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will differ widely depending on the variant you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with more choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer is soft and generates some quality body contouring, while the other materials in the mattress work to control this and create an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or those who prefer a firmer bed, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Most side sleepers will feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you are needing a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most their weight on a tinier area. Those who are lighter than average or people in the market for lots of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their primary position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.

Lastly, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 pounds or partners that weigh up to 250 pounds each. In the event you or your partner are substantially larger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that is built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with different types of bodies or preferences may also pick a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of these models sound quite right, you may always have a look at the four other models in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s noticeable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this will be significant for all buyers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Review Amazon

According to my research, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the individually wrapped coils that help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that motion from the opposite side of the mattress will bother you, you should not have a lot of concern with this mattress. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a brand-new mattress, most individuals would like to know whether they will feel like they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you may experience a little immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through those layers, you are going to find the pocketed coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the bed, the coils stop the mattress from compressing too much beyond that. I feel very secured sitting on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfy and secure. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll over or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I believe that the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically come with. Helix Mattress is no different. You create the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and in 2 weeks, it is sent to your door. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it for free, and get a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, Helix Sleep does its best to locate a local place to donate it. If there is no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Mattress Review Amazon

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an awesome 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has some limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the Helix to use the warranty, and you need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you need to use a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1” or longer, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s advised to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure to wash using soft circular movements, instead of rubbing.
