Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Pad Review

Helix Sleep offers full mattress customization. Buyers are requested to fill out a questionnaire that asks for their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress models; each individual option gives a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Mattress Pad Review

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for side sleepers. While those with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfortable on models with balanced support, while individuals that weigh 130 lbs or more often prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers two variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both of these variants have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with different tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier individuals. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Pad Review

Construction Helix Mattress Pad Review

All nine of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be fairly similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based on the foams utilized in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 different foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the beds have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine distinct mattresses (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Helix Mattress Pad Review

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you want something more luxurious, you can elect to swap out the standard cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change material for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will find a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which means you’re likely to encounter some satisfying body shaping. Even though it may seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness bed to incorporate a memory foam layer, it’s crucial to remember that the existence of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you will discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the structure, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to give additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us talk about their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on the variant you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be quite versatile and therefore best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to provide you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer is soft and produces some quality body shaping, while the other materials in the mattress work to control this and create an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are two more models for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Many side sleepers will feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, however, if you are needing less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you might want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a tinier region. Those who are smaller than average or people in the market for a lot of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their main position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 lbs or partners that weigh up to 250 pounds each. In the event you or your partner are significantly larger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with different types of bodies or preferences can also pick a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these options feel right, you can always have a look at the 4 other mattresses in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be crucial for many sleepers, those who doze with a partner may find it particularly interesting as it will show just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Pad Review

According to my research, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper concerned that movement from the other side of the bed will wake you, then you should not have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When purchasing a brand-new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re going to encounter a little immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the pocketed coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the bed, the coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot . I feel very secured seated on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There may be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Couples who want more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I’ll roll over or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I think the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually come with. Helix Mattress is no different. You customize the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it’s sent to your home. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, Helix Sleep locates a local place to donate it. If there’s no way the company can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Mattress Pad Review

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers a generous 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has a few limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the first owner of the Helix to make use of the guarantee, and you need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4” apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1 inch or more, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s suggested to use cold water with gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure that you clean using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
