Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress How Long To Expand

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Buyers are asked to complete a survey that discusses their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress variants; each respective option provides a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them ideal for those who sleep on their side. While those with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are suitable for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfortable on models with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 pounds or more often favor the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both of these variants have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them suitable for couples with different preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier individuals. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress How Long To Expand

Construction Helix Mattress How Long To Expand

All 9 of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be fairly similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness based on the foams used in order to attain more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 different foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the mattresses have all the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 distinct mattresses (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Mattress How Long To Expand

Underneath, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you would like something more amped up, you can choose to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change material to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll encounter a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, meaning you’re likely to encounter some gratifying body shaping. Even though it may seem odd for a purportedly medium firm bed to incorporate a memory foam layer, it’s important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this segment of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since the coils are wrapped individually, they are also likely to give additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer does not really affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on which variant you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be quite versatile and thus very popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with more options.

Laying down on the Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer feels soft and generates some high quality body shaping, while the other materials in the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s just enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or people who want a firmer bed, there are two more models for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Most side sleepers should feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you are needing less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all of their weight on a tinier region. People who are lighter than average or people looking for plenty of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their main position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, the manufacturer suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 lbs or partners that weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your partner are substantially larger than average, the company has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that is made to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Couples with differing types of bodies or tastes may also pick a dual comfort option that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of those options sound quite right, you can always have a look at the four other models in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the line).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this will be significant for all people, those who doze with a partner may find it especially interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress How Long To Expand

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the individually wrapped coils that help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that movement from the opposite side of the bed will bother you, then you should not have much concern with this mattress. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While buying a brand-new mattress, most individuals want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you may experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, when you sink through these layers, you’ll find the pocketed coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a vast range of individuals, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot beyond that. I feel very secured seated on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfy and safe. Partners who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Laying down, I feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually include. Helix is not any different. You create the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it is delivered to your door. From the minute you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it free, and get a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, Helix does its best to find a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Mattress How Long To Expand

Helix Warranty

Helix offers an amazing 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it has limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the original owner of the Helix to make use of the guarantee, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4” apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix starts to show an indentation of 1” or more, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is suggested to use cool water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Be sure that you clean using soft circular motions, instead of rubbing.
