Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Foundation Assembly

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Customers are asked to complete a survey that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other options. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress models; each respective model gives a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While those with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are great for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel more comfy on models with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 pounds or more often prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them great for couples with different preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier people. This model has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Mattress Foundation Assembly

Construction Helix Mattress Foundation Assembly

All 9 of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be quite similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending upon the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less firmness and more/less support. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the mattresses have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 unique variants (and hopefully have a mattress for everyone). Helix Mattress Foundation Assembly

Underneath, I concisely talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you would like something more luxurious, you can choose to swap out the standard cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will discover a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, meaning you’re probably going to experience some great body contouring. Even though it may seem strange for a supposedly medium firmness bed to make use of a memory foam layer, it’s crucial to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it produces quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this segment of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the structure, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Because the coils are wrapped individually, they are also going to give additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will uncover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the individually wrapped coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us chat about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on which version you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which will be very versatile and therefore exceptionally popular. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with more choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer feels soft and generates some quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials in the mattress work to control this and create an overall firmer structure. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or those who prefer a firmer mattress, there are two more options for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Majority of side sleepers will feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, however, if you are wanting a bit less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a smaller region. People who are smaller than average or people in the market for lots of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Lastly, Helix Sleep recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 lbs or partners that weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are significantly bigger than average, the company has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with differing types of bodies or preferences may also pick a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of these options seem right, you may always have a look at the four other models in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s detectable from one side of the bed to the other. While this will be important for many buyers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it especially intriguing as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Foundation Assembly

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper concerned that motion from the other side of the mattress will bother you, you should not have much concern with this mattress. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When buying a new mattress, the majority of people would like to know whether they’ll feel like they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you are likely to experience a little immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll find the individually-wrapped coils and find fantastic support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from compressing a lot beyond that. I feel very secure seated on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfy and safe. Couples who want more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the bed without feeling like I will roll off or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I think that the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically come with. Helix Mattress is no different. You customize the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it’s sent to your home. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it free, and get a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, Helix locates a local place to donate it. If there is no way the company can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Mattress Foundation Assembly

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an amazing 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you must be the first owner of the Helix to make use of the guarantee, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, something that usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s suggested to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Be certain that you clean using soft circular motions, instead of rubbing.
