Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made using polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Forbes

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Customers are requested to complete a questionnaire that asks for their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress models; each individual model provides a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfortable on variants with balanced support, while individuals who weigh 130 pounds or more often prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both of these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them great for couples with different tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a large variety of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Mattress Forbes

Construction Helix Mattress Forbes

All 9 of the different iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be quite similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending upon the foams utilized in order to attain more/less support and more/less firmness. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the mattresses have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine different variants (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Helix Mattress Forbes

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you prefer something more luxurious, you can opt to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll find a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which means you’re probably going to experience some gratifying body contouring. While it might seem odd for a purportedly medium firm bed to feature a memory foam layer, it’s important to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift into the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since the coils are individually wrapped, they are also likely to allow extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you will find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This segment does not affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will differ widely depending on the model you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and thus exceptionally popular. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to provide you with more options.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer feels soft and produces some high quality body shaping, while the other materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and make an overall firmer structure. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s just enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or people who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Most side sleepers will feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you’re needing less pressure while still going with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all their weight on a tinier region. Those who are smaller than average or those looking for plenty of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers should feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.

Last, Helix Sleep recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 pounds or couples that weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. In the event you or your spouse are substantially bigger than average, the company has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with differing body types or preferences may also pick a dual comfort option that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these models feel quite right, you can always check out the four other models in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s detectable from one side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be crucial for all people, those who doze with a spouse may find it especially intriguing as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Forbes

According to my research, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it contains, as well as the pocketed coils that help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper concerned that movement from the other side of the mattress will wake you, you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a brand-new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re going to encounter a little immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through those layers, you will find the pocketed coils and find great support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from compressing a lot beyond that. I feel very secured sitting on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfy and secure. Partners who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll over or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I think that the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually come with. Helix Mattress is no different. You create the mattress that’s intended for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it’s delivered to your door. From the minute you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it free, and receive a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, Helix does its best to locate a local place to donate it. If there is no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Mattress Forbes

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an amazing 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has a few limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the warranty, and you will need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to use a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is suggested to use cool water along gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Make certain to wash using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
