Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Firmness
Helix Sleep offers full mattress customization. Buyers are asked to fill out a questionnaire that discusses their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress variants; each individual model offers a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:
- Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
- Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
- Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
- Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
- Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
- Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for side sleepers. While hybrids that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are ideal for all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfy on variants with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the models with additional support.
Helix Sleep also offers 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both these models have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier individuals. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.
My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Mattress Firmness

Construction Helix Mattress Firmness
All nine of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be rather similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.
Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness depending on the foams used in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the mattresses have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine distinct variants (and hopefully have a mattress for everyone). Helix Mattress Firmness
Below, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.
Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you prefer something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric for heat regulation.
Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll encounter a heavy layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you’re probably going to experience some satisfying body shaping. Even though it may seem odd for a supposedly medium firmness bed to feature a memory foam layer, it is crucial to remember that the presence of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it gives quite a firm feeling.
Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you will discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the pocketed coils below.
Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this section of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Because these coils are wrapped individually, they are also going to give additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.
Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll uncover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.
Firmness and Support
After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their varying feels and firmness levels.
The firmness level of the Helix will differ widely depending on the variant you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and therefore very popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with more options.
Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and produces some high quality body shaping, while the other materials in the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also assist with re-positioning.
For those who sleep on their back, there is enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lower spine while supporting your back in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or people who want a firmer mattress, there are 2 more models for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.
Majority of side sleepers should feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you are needing a bit less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you may decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.
Side sleepers typically have to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with most their weight on a smaller region. People who are lighter than average or those looking for a lot of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher variants.
Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their main position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.
Lastly, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 lbs or couples that weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. In the event you or your partner are substantially bigger than average, Helix has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.
Partners with differing types of bodies or preferences can also pick a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.
Bear in mind that if neither of these options sound right, you could always check out the four other variants in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the line).
Next up, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be important for many buyers, those who doze with a partner may find it especially intriguing as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Firmness
Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it contains, as well as the individually wrapped coils which help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper concerned that movement from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, you should not have a lot of concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.
When getting a brand-new mattress, most people wish to know whether they’ll feel like they are sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.
While you are going to encounter some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, when you sink through these layers, you will reach the pocketed coils and find amazing support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of individuals, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.
While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the bed, the coils prevent the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel very secured sitting on the bed.
In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfy and secure. Couples who need more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.
Laying down, I feel like I could get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall off or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I think the Helix has nice edge support.
100 Night Sleep Trial
One of the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically include. Helix Sleep is not any different. You create the mattress that’s intended for you, place your order, and in a couple of weeks, it’s delivered to your home. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it free of charge, and receive a full refund.
If you do return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. In fact, the company finds a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Mattress Firmness
The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you should be the original owner of the Helix to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.
Provided that you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to use a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4” apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!
If your Helix begins to have an indentation of 1 inch or more, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?
Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.
For routine cleaning, it’s suggested to use cold water with gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be certain that you wash using soft circular movements, instead of rubbing.
