Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses made using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Facebook

Helix Sleep gives you full mattress customization. Customers are asked to fill out a survey that discusses their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress variants; each respective option provides a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for those who sleep on their side. While mattresses that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfortable on variants with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 pounds or more often favor the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both of these variants have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them suitable for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier people. This variant has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Facebook

Construction Helix Mattress Facebook

All nine of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be rather similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness depending upon the foams utilized in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The four unique foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the variants have all the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine different versions (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Mattress Facebook

Below, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you want something more amped up, you can elect to swap out the normal cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change fabric for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will encounter a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, which means you’re probably going to encounter some satisfying body shaping. Even though it may seem strange for a supposedly medium firm mattress to incorporate a memory foam layer, it is crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this segment of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the structure, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Since these coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to encourage additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you’ll discover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the version you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and therefore very popular. If you have more specific preferences, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with more choices.

Laying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer feels soft and generates some quality body contouring, while the other materials within the mattress work to counteract this and make an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your back in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or those who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more models for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Majority of side sleepers will feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you’re wanting a bit less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you may decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with most of their weight on a smaller area. Those who are lighter than average or those in the market for plenty of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers will feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this is not their main position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.

Lastly, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 pounds or couples who weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. In the event you or your spouse are significantly larger than average, Helix has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with differing body types or preferences may also pick a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these options sound quite right, you can always check out the 4 other models in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is noticeable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be crucial for many people, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly intriguing as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Facebook

Based on my observation, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it contains, as well as the individually wrapped coils that help keep motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that movement from the other side of the mattress will bother you, you shouldn’t have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While purchasing a brand-new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re likely to encounter a little immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the individually-wrapped coils and experience fantastic support. This combination will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from collapsing a lot beyond that. I feel quite secure seated on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfy and safe. Couples who want more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Lying down, I feel like I can get near the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually include. Helix Mattress is not any different. You create the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and in a couple of weeks, it’s delivered to your home. From the minute you click to order the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it for free, and get a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, the company does its best to locate a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Mattress Facebook

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers an amazing 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it has limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you must be the original owner of the mattress to make use of the guarantee, and you will need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you need to use a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4” apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1” or longer, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleanup, it is advised to use cold water with gentle dish soap to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure to wash using gentle circular movements, instead of rubbing.
