Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Consumer Reports

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Purchasers are urged to fill out a survey that asks for their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress models; each respective model offers a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel more comfortable on variants with balanced support, while individuals that weigh 130 lbs or more often prefer the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets two variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these variants have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them suitable for couples with different preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier individuals. This variant has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a wide range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Consumer Reports

Construction Helix Mattress Consumer Reports

All 9 of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be fairly similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density depending upon the foams used in order to attain more/less firmness and more/less support. The four unique foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all of the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 different mattresses (and hopefully have a mattress for everybody). Helix Mattress Consumer Reports

Below, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some wonderful breathability. However, if you would like something more lavish, you can opt to swap out the standard cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change fabric for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will discover a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which means you are likely to encounter some great body shaping. While it might seem strange for a supposedly medium firm bed to feature a memory foam layer, it is crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you will find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and create a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this section of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Since the coils are individually wrapped, they are also going to encourage additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you will uncover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t really affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on the model you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and thus very popular. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with more choices.

Laying down on the Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer is soft and produces some top quality body shaping, while the other materials in the mattress work to counteract this and make an overall firmer composition. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there is enough good comfort material here to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or people who want a firmer bed, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Most side sleepers will feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, but, if you are wanting less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with most of their weight on a smaller area. People who are smaller than average or people in the market for a lot of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their primary position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or partners that weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. In the event you or your spouse are significantly bigger than average, Helix has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that’s constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with differing types of bodies or tastes may also select a dual comfort option that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of those options seem right, you can always check out the four other beds in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the line).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this will be important for many people, those who sleep with a spouse may find it particularly intriguing as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you will be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Consumer Reports

According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the individually wrapped coils that help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper concerned that movement from the other side of the bed will bother you, you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When buying a brand-new mattress, the majority of people would like to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you may experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll find the pocketed coils and feel great support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the coils prevent the mattress from compressing too much . I feel very secure sitting on the mattress.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There may be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but lying on the side should feel comfy and safe. Partners who want more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Lying down, I feel like I can get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I’ll roll over or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I think that the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually include. Helix Sleep is not any different. You customize the mattress that is meant for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it is sent to your door. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it for free of charge, and get a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. In fact, the company finds a local place to donate it. If there’s no way the company can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Mattress Consumer Reports

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it comes with some limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most warranties). Of course, you must be the original owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you will need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you will need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4” apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to show an indentation of 1” or more, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleaning, it is advised to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Be certain that you wash using gentle circular motions, rather than rubbing.

Final Thoughts Helix Mattress Consumer Reports
