Helix Sleep offers hybrid mattresses manufactured with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified using polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Construction

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Buyers are urged to complete a survey that asks for their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective variant offers a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for side sleepers. While hybrids with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfortable on models with balanced support, while those who weigh 130 lbs or more tend to favor the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both these variants have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them suitable for couples with different preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier individuals. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Mattress Construction

Construction Helix Mattress Construction

All nine of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be fairly similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness depending on the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less firmness and more/less support. The 4 different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the beds have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really won’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine unique mattresses (and supposedly have a mattress for everybody). Helix Mattress Construction

Below, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. However, if you prefer something more luxurious, you can opt to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change fabric for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll find a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you are probably going to experience some gratifying body shaping. Even though it may seem odd for a supposedly medium firm mattress to feature a memory foam comfort layer, it’s crucial to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you will discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this section of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the structure, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Since these coils are individually wrapped, they’re also going to give additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will uncover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their different firmness levels and feels.

The firmness of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on which version you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have moderate firmness levels, which is going to be very versatile and therefore best-selling. If you have more specific preferences, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with more choices.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam layer feels soft and generates some quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials in the Midnight work to counteract this and make an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s just enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your back in a neutral position. For larger buyers or people who want a firmer bed, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight models.

Many side sleepers will feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you are wanting a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a tinier region. People who are smaller than average or those in the market for plenty of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, the manufacturer recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 pounds or couples who weigh up to 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are significantly larger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that is created to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with different types of bodies or tastes can also select a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of those models feel quite right, you could always check out the 4 other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s noticeable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this will be important for all buyers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Construction

According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the pocketed coils that help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper concerned that motion from the other side of the mattress will wake you, then you should not have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When purchasing a brand-new mattress, most individuals would like to know whether they will feel as though they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you’re likely to encounter some immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll reach the individually-wrapped coils and experience great support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the coils prevent the mattress from compressing too much . I feel quite secure sitting on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and secure. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall over or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually include. Helix is not any different. You create the mattress that’s intended for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it is sent to your home. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it free, and receive a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. Actually, Helix locates a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Mattress Construction

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers an amazing 10-year guarantee that covers defects, but it comes with a few limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most guarantees ). Of course, you must be the first owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to have a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4” apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to have an indentation of 1” or more, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleanup, it’s suggested to use cool water with gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Be certain that you clean using soft circular motions, instead of rubbing.
