Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Comparison

Helix Sleep gives you full mattress customization. Buyers are asked to complete a survey that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other elements. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective option gives a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Mattress Comparison

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for side sleepers. While hybrids with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while individuals that weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both of these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with differing tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier people. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a large assortment of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Comparison

Construction Helix Mattress Comparison

All nine of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be fairly similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density based on the foams utilized in order to attain more/less firmness and more/less support. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the variants have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 unique mattresses (and hopefully have a mattress for everyone). Helix Mattress Comparison

Underneath, I concisely talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you want something more luxurious, you can elect to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you are likely to encounter some gratifying body contouring. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness mattress to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it is crucial to remember that the presence of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it gives quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll discover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the structure, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Because the coils are wrapped individually, they are also likely to encourage extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you will discover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t really affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their varying feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on the model you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be quite versatile and thus exceptionally popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with more options.

Lying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and generates some quality body shaping, while the other materials within the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is enough good comfort material in the Helix Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or people who want a firmer bed, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Most side sleepers will feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you’re needing a bit less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with most of their weight on a tinier area. Those who are smaller than average or people looking for plenty of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach will feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Finally, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or partners that weigh up to 250 pounds each. In the event you or your spouse are substantially bigger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s built to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with differing types of bodies or preferences can also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of these models sound right, you could always check out the four other mattresses in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this will be important for all buyers, those who sleep with a partner may find it especially intriguing as it will show just how bothered you will be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Comparison

According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that movement from the other side of the mattress will wake you, you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While purchasing a new mattress, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you will reach the pocketed coils and experience amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the coils prevent the mattress from collapsing too much beyond that. I feel quite secure sitting on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average for edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate stronger edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will fall off or be pushed off the bed. Overall, I think the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically include. Helix Mattress is not any different. You create the mattress that is meant for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it is sent to your home. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. In fact, Helix locates a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Mattress Comparison

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an amazing 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has limitations, exceptions, plus the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you should be the original owner of the Helix to make use of the warranty, and you need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to have a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4” apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix starts to have an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it’s suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleanup, it’s suggested to use cool water with gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Make sure to clean using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
