Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Helix Mattress Better Business Bureau

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Buyers are asked to fill out a questionnaire that asks for their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other elements. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective model gives a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While mattresses that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are great for all sleep positions. Lighter men and women may feel most comfy on variants with balanced support, while people who weigh 130 pounds or more tend to favor the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them great for couples with different tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier people. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection accommodates sleepers with a large assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Mattress Better Business Bureau

Construction Helix Mattress Better Business Bureau

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be rather similar. The 6 core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based upon the foams used in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The four unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the mattresses have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the consumer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine distinct versions (and hopefully have a mattress for everyone). Helix Mattress Better Business Bureau

Underneath, I quickly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you prefer something more luxurious, you can opt to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase-change material for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, which means you’re probably going to experience some satisfying body shaping. While it might seem odd for a supposedly medium firm bed to feature a memory foam comfort layer, it is important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the structure, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Since the coils are wrapped individually, they’re also going to allow additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll discover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer doesn’t really affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s chat about their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will differ widely depending on the model you choose. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be quite versatile and therefore very popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with more choices.

Laying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and generates some high quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the mattress work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or those who want a firmer bed, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Most side sleepers will feel totally comfy on the Midnight, but, if you’re wanting less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with all of their weight on a smaller area. People who are smaller than average or people in the market for plenty of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers will feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can make sure their hips do not dip and over-arch their back.

Lastly, the manufacturer suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 lbs or couples who weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. In the event you or your spouse are significantly larger than average, Helix has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s made to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with different types of bodies or preferences can also pick a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of those models seem right, you could always have a look at the 4 other beds in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be significant for many people, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it will illuminate just how bothered you will be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Mattress Better Business Bureau

According to my research, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that movement from the opposite side of the bed will wake you, then you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this mattress. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When getting a new mattress, the majority of people would like to know whether they will feel like they are sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter a little immediate sinkage from the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through those layers, you will find the individually-wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combination will appeal to a wide range of sleepers, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the Helix Midnight, the coils prevent the mattress from compressing too much beyond that. I feel very secure sitting on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is due to their freshly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil system. There can be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Lying down, I feel like I can get near the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall over or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually come with. Helix Sleep is no different. You create the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it is sent to your door. From the moment you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. In fact, the company does its best to find a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Mattress Better Business Bureau

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it has a few limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you must be the first owner of the Helix to make use of the warranty, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For routine cleaning, it’s suggested to use cool water with gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Make certain to clean using soft circular movements, instead of rubbing.
