Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified using polyfoam base layers. Helix Luxury Hybrid Mattress Review

Helix Sleep allows full mattress customization. Customers are asked to fill out a survey that discusses their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other options. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress variants; each individual model gives a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Luxury Hybrid Mattress Review

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them ideal for those who sleep on their side. While those with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are ideal for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfortable on models with balanced support, while people that weigh 130 lbs or more often prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers two models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both of these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with different preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier people. This mattress has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a wide variety of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Luxury Hybrid Mattress Review

Construction Helix Luxury Hybrid Mattress Review

All nine of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be rather similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density based upon the foams utilized in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the variants have all of the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine unique mattresses (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Luxury Hybrid Mattress Review

Below, I concisely talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you prefer something more lavish, you can opt to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase change fabric for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll discover a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, meaning you’re likely to experience some satisfying body contouring. While it might seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness mattress to feature a memory foam comfort layer, it’s important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress is made up of this segment of individually wrapped coils. This system gives a supportive lift into the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Since these coils are individually wrapped, they are also going to give additional breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you will find a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment doesn’t really affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us chat about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will differ widely depending on which version you select. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have medium firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and therefore very popular. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to oblige you with additional options.

Laying down on the Helix Midnight, the uppermost foam layer is soft and produces some quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to counteract this and create an overall firmer composition. The pocketed coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier buyers or people who prefer a firmer bed, there are two more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Many side sleepers will feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you are wanting a bit less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with most their weight on a tinier region. Those who are smaller than average or people looking for lots of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their main position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Lastly, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 lbs or couples that weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your partner are significantly larger than average, the company has also created a bed called the Nightfall that’s made to accommodate a total weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with different body types or tastes can also select a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if neither of these models seem quite right, you could always have a look at the 4 other variants in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is noticeable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be important for all sleepers, those who doze with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it will illuminate just how bothered you’ll be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Luxury Hybrid Mattress Review

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space due to the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that motion from the opposite side of the bed will wake you, then you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When buying a brand-new mattress, the majority of people want to know whether they’ll feel like they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

While you may experience some immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, by the time you sink through those layers, you are going to reach the individually-wrapped coils and feel great support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of individuals, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the pocketed coils prevent the mattress from compressing a lot . I feel very secure sitting on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Laying down, I feel like I could get near the edge of the bed without feeling like I’ll fall off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they typically include. Helix Sleep is not any different. You create the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it’s delivered to your home. From the moment you click to buy the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not ideal, you can return it free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not restocked or resold. In fact, Helix does its best to find a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, they have it recycled instead. Helix Luxury Hybrid Mattress Review

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the warranty, and you will need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you need to use a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4” apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to prevent it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleanup, it is suggested to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Be certain that you wash using gentle circular motions, instead of rubbing.
