Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Hybrid Review

Helix Sleep allows full mattress customization. Purchasers are requested to complete a survey that asks for their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress options; each respective variant offers a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Hybrid Review

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While those that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 lbs or more often prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both of these models have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them suitable for couples with different preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier people. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a wide variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Hybrid Review

Construction Helix Hybrid Review

All nine of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be fairly similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density depending on the foams utilized in order to attain more/less firmness and more/less support. The four unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine distinct mattresses (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Helix Hybrid Review

Underneath, I concisely discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you would like something more lavish, you can opt to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change material to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll encounter a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, meaning you’re likely to encounter some satisfying body shaping. Even though it may seem strange for a supposedly medium firm bed to incorporate a memory foam layer, it’s important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it gives quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feeling as you hit the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this segment of pocketed coils. This system gives a supportive lift to the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because the coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to allow additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you will find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section does not affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us chat about their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the version you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and therefore best-selling. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with more choices.

Laying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer is soft and produces some high quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to control this and make an overall firmer structure. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your upper spine in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or people who prefer a firmer mattress, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Most side sleepers should feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re needing less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with all of their weight on a tinier region. Those who are lighter than average or people looking for a lot of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher models.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their backbone.

Finally, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 lbs or couples that weigh up to 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are substantially larger than average, the company has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that is created to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with differing types of bodies or tastes may also select a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if none of those options seem quite right, you may always check out the 4 other models in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, slightly firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be crucial for all sleepers, those who doze with a partner may find it particularly intriguing as it’ll show just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Helix Hybrid Review

Based on my observation, Helix surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that movement from the opposite side of the bed will bother you, you should not have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a new mattress, the majority of people wish to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re going to experience a little immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, when you sink through these layers, you’ll reach the individually-wrapped coils and find fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide assortment of individuals, but will suit back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from collapsing too much . I feel quite secure seated on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be a little compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfy and safe. Partners who need more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Laying down, I feel like I could get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically come with. Helix Sleep is not any different. You create the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it’s sent to your door. From the moment you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to check it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it free, and get a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. Actually, Helix Sleep locates a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Hybrid Review

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Of course, you should be the original owner of the mattress to make use of the guarantee, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to use a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your Helix starts to show an indentation of 1” or longer, something that usually happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleanup, it is advised to use cold water with gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure that you clean using gentle circular motions, rather than rubbing.
