Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Headboard

Helix Sleep offers complete mattress customization. Customers are requested to fill out a survey that asks for their weight, height, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress variants; each individual option gives a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While mattresses that have moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are great for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfortable on variants with balanced support, while individuals that weigh 130 lbs or more tend to prefer the models with additional support.

Helix Sleep also offers two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and extra support). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, making them suitable for couples with different tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an extra layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also offer strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and produce less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Headboard

Construction Helix Headboard

All nine of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be quite similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness depending upon the foams used in order to attain more/less support and more/less firmness. The four unique foams used within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the variants have all the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 distinct variants (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Headboard

Underneath, I concisely discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. But, if you prefer something more luxurious, you can elect to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change fabric to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll discover a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you are probably going to experience some gratifying body contouring. Even though it may seem odd for a purportedly medium firm mattress to incorporate a memory foam layer, it’s important to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage doesn’t necessarily translate to softness; in fact, oftentimes it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress consists of this section of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, as opposed to “in it”. Because these coils are wrapped individually, they are also going to give extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you’ll discover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This segment doesn’t really affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to provide the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us talk about their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will differ widely depending on which version you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and thus very popular. If you have more specific preferences, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with additional choices.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and generates some high quality body contouring, while the other materials in the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also help with re-positioning.

For back sleepers, there’s just enough good comfort material here to conform to your lower spine while supporting your back in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or people who want a firmer mattress, there are 2 more models for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Most side sleepers will feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you are wanting less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you may decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with all their weight on a smaller area. Those who are lighter than average or those in the market for a lot of pressure relief may want to stay with the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers will feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their main position or they have a tendency to change things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their spine.

Last, the manufacturer suggests Helix for sleepers around 350 lbs or couples who weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. In the event you or your spouse are significantly larger than average, Helix has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that is built to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with different body types or tastes may also select a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of those models sound right, you may always have a look at the 4 other mattresses in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the line).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s noticeable from 1 side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be significant for all sleepers, those who doze with a spouse may find it especially interesting as it will show just how bothered you’ll be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Headboard

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it contains, as well as the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper afraid that motion from the other side of the mattress will bother you, you should not have much concern with this hybrid. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

When buying a new mattress, the majority of men and women wish to know whether they’ll feel as though they are sinking “into” the mattress or lying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re going to experience a little immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, when you sink through those layers, you are going to reach the individually-wrapped coils and feel amazing support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of individuals, but will suit back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from compressing too much . I feel quite secured seated on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their freshly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfy and secure. Couples who need more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll off or be pushed off the mattress. Overall, I believe that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually come with. Helix Mattress is no different. You customize the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and in 2 weeks, it is sent to your home. From the moment you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t what you wanted, you can return it for free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t resold or restocked. In fact, Helix Sleep finds a local place to donate it. If there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Headboard

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year guarantee that covers flaws, but it comes with some limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you should be the original owner of the mattress to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all Helix’s expectations for use, your warranty will be valid. That means you need to have a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4” apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress begins to have an indentation of 1” or more, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleanup, it’s suggested to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any dirt or stains. Be certain to wash using gentle circular motions, rather than rubbing.
