Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Helix Firm Mattress Review

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Purchasers are asked to complete a survey that asks for their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress models; each individual option provides a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Firm Mattress Review

Helix Sleep mattresses with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While those with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfortable on variants with balanced support, while individuals that weigh 130 lbs or more tend to prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets 2 variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both these models have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them suitable for couples with differing preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an additional layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a wide range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement nicely, and create less noise than the normal hybrid. Helix Firm Mattress Review

Construction Helix Firm Mattress Review

All 9 of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be fairly similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density depending on the foams used in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The four unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the beds have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine distinct mattresses (and hopefully have a model for everyone). Helix Firm Mattress Review

Below, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you would like something more amped up, you can opt to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will find a thick layer of memory foam. This type of foam has a slow response to pressure, which means you’re likely to encounter some great body shaping. Even though it may seem strange for a purportedly medium firmness mattress to incorporate a memory foam layer, it’s important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it gives quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and set a supportive, medium firm feeling as you reach the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – The majority of the mattress consists of this section of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to place the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Because the coils are individually wrapped, they are also likely to give extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last, you’ll find a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section does not really affect the feel of the bed too much, working mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us talk about their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix is going to vary widely depending on the version you choose. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and therefore best-selling. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with more options.

Laying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam comfort layer is soft and generates some top quality body contouring, while the other materials within the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer composition. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger sleepers or people who prefer a firmer mattress, there are two more models for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Majority of side sleepers should feel perfectly comfy on the Midnight, however, if you are needing a bit less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that’s breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically have to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with most their weight on a smaller region. People who are smaller than average or those in the market for plenty of pressure relief may want to stick to the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers will feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their main position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so that they can make sure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Finally, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 pounds or partners that weigh up to 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are significantly larger than average, the company has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that’s constructed to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with different body types or tastes may also pick a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of those options sound quite right, you could always have a look at the four other variants in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s noticeable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be crucial for many sleepers, those who doze with a partner may find it particularly intriguing as it will illuminate just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Firm Mattress Review

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper concerned that movement from the other side of the bed will wake you, you should not have a lot of concern with this mattress. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

When purchasing a brand-new mattress, the majority of people would like to know whether they will feel as though they are sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you may encounter a little immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to reach the pocketed coils and feel fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide range of individuals, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the coils stop the mattress from compressing a lot . I feel quite secure seated on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfy and secure. Couples who need more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get close to the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll roll over or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I believe the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually come with. Helix Mattress is no different. You customize the mattress that’s meant for you, place your order, and within 2 weeks, it’s sent to your home. From the minute you click to buy the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it free, and get a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. In fact, the company does its best to find a local place to donate it. When there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Firm Mattress Review

Helix Warranty

Helix Sleep offers a generous 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it has some limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the mattress to make use of the guarantee, and you will need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you need to have a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to show an indentation of 1 inch or more, something that generally happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no flipping, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleaning, it’s suggested to use cool water with gentle dish detergent to clean any dirt or stains. Be sure that you clean using gentle circular motions, rather than rubbing.
