Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses made using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Helix Ex

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Customers are urged to complete a survey that discusses their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress options; each respective variant gives a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for side sleepers. While mattresses with moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfortable on models with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 pounds or more often prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 models with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both of these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with differing preferences. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This variant has an extra layer of memory foam for optimum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a large variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Ex

Construction Helix Ex

All nine of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction will be fairly similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in density and firmness depending upon the foams used in order to attain more/less firmness and more/less support. The four unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the mattresses have all the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 distinct variants (and supposedly have a model for everyone). Helix Ex

Underneath, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses have exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some wonderful breathability. But, if you would like something more luxurious, you can choose to swap out the regular cover for the UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric for temperature regulation.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you will encounter a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which means you are probably going to encounter some great body shaping. Even though it may seem odd for a purportedly medium firm mattress to incorporate a memory foam layer, it’s crucial to remember that the existence of deep sinkage does not necessarily translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it generates quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the comfort layer and set a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the pocketed coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this section of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the structure, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, as opposed to “in it”. Since the coils are individually wrapped, they’re also going to allow additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll uncover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer does not affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to react.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s talk about their varying firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix will vary widely depending on the model you choose. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which is going to be quite versatile and therefore best-selling. If you are more particular, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with additional options.

Lying down on the Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer is soft and generates some quality body contouring, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to control this and create an overall firmer composition. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or people who prefer a firmer bed, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Many side sleepers should feel totally comfy on the Midnight, however, if you’re needing a bit less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you might want to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be more mindful of pressure because they sleep with most of their weight on a smaller area. Those who are lighter than average or people looking for lots of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this isn’t their primary position or they have a tendency to switch things up a lot. Firmer choices may be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their backbone.

Finally, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 lbs or couples who weigh up to 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are significantly larger than average, Helix has also created a bed called the Nightfall that is constructed to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with different body types or preferences may also pick a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these options seem quite right, you may always check out the four other models in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer compared to the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest mattress of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Now, let’s chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that’s detectable from 1 side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be crucial for many sleepers, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it will show just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Ex

According to my research, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it contains, in addition to the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper afraid that motion from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, you should not have a lot of concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While purchasing a brand-new mattress, most people would like to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

While you are likely to experience a little immediate sinkage from the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through those layers, you will reach the pocketed coils and feel great support. This combination will interest a vast assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit near the edge of the Helix Midnight, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from collapsing a lot beyond that. I feel quite secured seated on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be a little compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but lying on the side will feel comfortable and safe. Couples who want more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I’ll fall off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think that the Helix mattress has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they usually come with. Helix is not any different. You customize the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it is sent to your door. From the minute you click to order the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it is not what you wanted, you can return it free of charge, and receive a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. In fact, Helix does its best to find a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Helix Ex

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it has limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you should be the original owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you will need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a proper foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1” or longer, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is advised to use cold water with gentle dish soap to clean any stains or dirt. Be sure to wash using soft circular movements, rather than rubbing.
