Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses made with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Bed Too Firm

Helix Sleep gives you complete mattress customization. Buyers are requested to complete a questionnaire that asks for their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other options. Based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following 6 mattress models; each respective option offers a unique combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them optimal for those who sleep on their side. While hybrids that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfy on variants with balanced support, while individuals that weigh 130 pounds or more tend to prefer the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets two variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with extra support and moderate cushioning). Both these mattresses have one ‘Soft’ side and one ‘Firm’ side, which makes them great for couples with different tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for bigger, heavier individuals. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect accommodates sleepers with a large range of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate motion transfer nicely, and produce less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Bed Too Firm

Construction Helix Bed Too Firm

All 9 of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction should be quite similar. The 6 core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses differ in firmness and density based upon the foams used in order to achieve more/less support and more/less firmness. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the models have all the foams – some just have three of the four – but it really won’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer nine unique models (and hopefully have a mattress for everybody). Helix Bed Too Firm

Underneath, I concisely discuss the construction (materials and quality) of your average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses have the same cover, made of 100 percent polyester. I thought it to be thin and pliable, allowing for some great breathability. However, if you prefer something more lavish, you can opt to swap out the normal cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change material to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will find a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you are likely to experience some satisfying body contouring. While it might seem strange for a supposedly medium firmness mattress to incorporate a memory foam layer, it’s important to remember that the presence of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it gives quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to suppress the sinkage of the comfort layer and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the individually wrapped coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to position the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Because the coils are wrapped individually, they are also going to give extra breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll uncover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment does not affect the feel of the bed too much, functioning mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a peek at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their varying firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will vary widely depending on which version you pick out. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which is going to be quite versatile and thus exceptionally popular. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with more choices.

Laying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer is soft and generates some high quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the mattress work to counteract this and make an overall firmer structure. The firmer support foams and pocketed coils also assist with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s enough good comfort material in the Helix Midnight to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For larger buyers or people who prefer a firmer bed, there are 2 more models for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Majority of side sleepers will feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you are needing less pressure while still sticking with a versatile medium firmness, you may decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and gives the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically have to be mindful of pressure since they sleep with all of their weight on a tinier area. Those who are lighter than average or those in the market for a lot of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Stomach sleepers should feel supported in the Midnight, especially if this is not their main position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their back.

Lastly, Helix Sleep recommends Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 pounds or couples that weigh a maximum of 250 pounds each. In the event you or your partner are significantly bigger than average, Helix has also produced a bed called the Nightfall that’s created to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with different body types or tastes may also select a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of these options seem right, you could always check out the four other variants in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the line).

Motion Transfer

Now, let us chat about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is noticeable from one side of the bed to the other. While this is going to be important for many sleepers, those who sleep with a partner may find it especially intriguing as it’ll illuminate just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Bed Too Firm

Based on my observation, Helix exceeds expectations for hybrids in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it incorporates, in addition to the individually wrapped coils which help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper afraid that movement from the opposite side of the mattress will wake you, you should not have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that any of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While purchasing a new mattress, the majority of individuals would like to know whether they will feel as though they are sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

While you are going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the soft foam at the top, by the time you sink through these layers, you are going to hit the pocketed coils and experience amazing support. This combo will interest a vast range of sleepers, but will satisfy stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the pocketed coils stop the mattress from compressing too much . I feel quite secured sitting on the mattress.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses perform above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their recently updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There can be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfy and secure. Couples who need more space to stretch out typically appreciate strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I can get near the edge of the mattress without feeling like I will roll off or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I believe the Helix has great edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials they typically come with. Helix Sleep is not any different. You customize the mattress that is meant for you, place your order, and in 2 weeks, it’s delivered to your home. From the minute you click to order the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it for free, and get a full refund.

If you do return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. In fact, the company finds a local place to donate it. When there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Bed Too Firm

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes an awesome 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it comes with limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most guarantees ). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the mattress to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a suitable base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress begins to show an indentation of 1 inch or more, which is what generally happens when low-density foams break down, then you could qualify for a replacement or repair of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no flipping, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress perhaps once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For routine cleanup, it’s advised to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any dirt or stains. Make sure to wash using gentle circular motions, rather than rubbing.
