Helix Sleep sells hybrid mattresses manufactured using dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores enhanced using polyfoam base layers. Helix Adjustable Base Review

Helix Sleep gives you full mattress customization. Buyers are requested to complete a survey that discusses their height, weight, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Then based on these answers, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress options; each individual model provides a one-of-a-kind combination of firmness and support:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Adjustable Base Review

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, making them perfect for those who sleep on their side. While mattresses with moderate cushioning don’t conform as much and are ideal for all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel most comfy on models with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 lbs or more often prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers 2 variants with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with targeted cushioning and balanced support) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them suitable for couples with different preferences. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for larger, heavier individuals. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses discovered that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large variety of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate movement well, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Helix Adjustable Base Review

Construction Helix Adjustable Base Review

All nine of the various iterations of this mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be quite similar. The six core models (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in firmness and density depending upon the foams utilized in order to get more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the mattresses have all the foams – some only have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are merely levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer 9 distinct mattresses (and hopefully have a mattress for everybody). Helix Adjustable Base Review

Below, I quickly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the typical Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be stretchy and thin, allowing for some nice breathability. However, if you prefer something more luxurious, you can elect to swap out the normal cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric for heat regulation.

Comfort Layer – On top, you will discover a heavy layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, meaning you are probably going to encounter some great body shaping. While it might seem odd for a supposedly medium firmness mattress to make use of a memory foam comfort layer, it is crucial to remember that the existence of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in actuality, oftentimes it produces quite a firm feeling.

Transition Layer – After sinking through the comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the pocketed coils below.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress is made up of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since the coils are wrapped individually, they’re also going to encourage extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Last but not least, you’ll discover a thin section of high-density poly foam. This segment does not affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the variant you pick out. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which will be very versatile and therefore best-selling. If you have more specific needs, however, Helix Sleep is happy to oblige you with more choices.

Laying down on the Midnight, the memory foam layer feels soft and produces some top quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to counteract this and make an overall firmer structure. The individually-wrapped coils and the firmer support foams also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is just enough good comfort material in the mattress to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole upper spine in a neutral position. For heavier sleepers or people who prefer a firmer bed, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Dawn and Helix Twilight variants.

Most side sleepers should feel totally comfortable on the Midnight, however, if you’re needing a bit less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to check out the Helix Dusk, which uses a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a little bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be more mindful of pressure since they sleep with all their weight on a smaller region. Those who are smaller than average or people looking for a lot of pressure relief might want to stick to the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel comfortable in the Midnight, especially if this is not their main position or they tend to switch things up a lot. Firmer mattresses might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can ensure their hips don’t dip and over-arch their spine.

Lastly, Helix Sleep suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers around 350 pounds or partners that weigh up to 250 pounds each. If you or your partner are substantially larger than average, the company has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that is made to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Partners with different types of bodies or tastes can also select a dual comfort variant that pairs Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these models feel quite right, you could always have a look at the four other variants in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let’s talk about motion transfer, or the amount of disturbance that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be important for many sleepers, those who sleep with a spouse may find it particularly interesting as it’ll show just how bothered you may be by your bed mate’s nighttime movements. Helix Adjustable Base Review

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrids in this space because of the quantity and quality of foam it contains, as well as the individually wrapped coils which help keep motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper worried that movement from the other side of the bed will bother you, then you shouldn’t have much concern with this mattress. I would say that all of the Helix mattresses are a good choice for couples.

Sinkage

While getting a brand-new mattress, the majority of men and women want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the it or lying “on top” of it.

While you may encounter a little immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you will reach the individually-wrapped coils and feel great support. This combo will interest a vast range of individuals, but will suit stomach and back sleepers the most.

Edge Support

While I do feel the foam collapse as I sit near the edge of the mattress, the coils stop the mattress from compressing too much . I feel quite secured sitting on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support in comparison to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is because of their newly updated edges that contain reinforcement in the coil system. There can be some compression in the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfy and secure. Couples who want more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Laying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I think that the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

One of the best features of buying a mattress-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually include. Helix Sleep is no different. You customize the mattress that is made for you, place your order, and within a couple of weeks, it’s sent to your door. From the moment you click to buy the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to try it out (minus the time for delivery, so it is more like 90 nights). If it isn’t ideal, you can return it free, and receive a complete refund.

Should you return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, Helix finds a local place to donate it. If there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Helix Adjustable Base Review

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers defects, but it has a few limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the purchaser (like most guarantees ). Of course, you should be the original owner of the Helix to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you save your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all of the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to use a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4” apart) and you don’t use the Helix improperly – no jumping on it!

If your mattress starts to show an indentation of 1” or longer, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could be eligible for a repair or replacement of your Helix.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses need no turning, but it’s recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly a couple of times a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it’s advised to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any dirt or stains. Be sure that you wash using soft circular movements, instead of rubbing.
