Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured with polyfoam comfort systems, dual-layer covers, and pocketed coil support cores fortified with polyfoam base layers. Carnival Helix 9 Spa Balcony Room

Helix Sleep gives you full mattress customization. Buyers are asked to complete a questionnaire that discusses their weight, height, sleep position, firmness preferences, and other factors. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will suggest one of the following six mattress options; each respective variant offers a unique combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support

Helix Sleep mattresses that have targeted cushioning conform closely, making them ideal for those who sleep on their side. While those that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are ideal for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter individuals may feel more comfortable on models with balanced support, while individuals that weigh 130 lbs or more tend to prefer the variants with extra support.

Helix Sleep also markets two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with moderate cushioning and additional support). Both these mattresses have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, making them ideal for couples with different tastes. Last, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid developed for bigger, heavier people. This model has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable aspect conforms to sleepers with a large assortment of body types and firmness preferences. The mattresses also provide strong edge support, isolate motion transfer well, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Carnival Helix 9 Spa Balcony Room

Construction Carnival Helix 9 Spa Balcony Room

All 9 of the different iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 variants, the construction will be fairly similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, composed of 6 inches of individually wrapped coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness based on the foams utilized in order to attain more/less support and more/less firmness. The 4 unique foams utilized within Helix mattresses are memory foam, high-grade polyurethane foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all of the mattresses have all the foams – some just have 3 of the 4 – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the buyer. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull in order to offer nine different versions (and supposedly have a model for everybody). Carnival Helix 9 Spa Balcony Room

Below, I briefly discuss the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

helix-midnight-construction

Cover – Initially, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I found it to be pliable and thin, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you want something more luxurious, you can opt to swap out the standard cover for the UltraCool one, which is made up of a phase-change material to regulate heat.

Comfort Layer – On top, you’ll discover a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow response to pressure, which means you’re likely to experience some great body contouring. Even though it may seem strange for a purportedly medium firm bed to incorporate a memory foam comfort layer, it’s important to remember that the feeling of deep sinkage does not always translate to softness; in fact, most of the time it generates quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the memory foam comfort layer, you’ll find a transition layer of poly foam. This layer of foam works to suppress the sinkage of the memory foam and establish a supportive, medium firm feel as you reach the pocketed coils underneath.

Support Layer – The bulk of the mattress consists of this section of pocketed coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the bed, instead of “in it”. Because these coils are individually wrapped, they are also likely to allow additional breathability as air flows in between the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you’ll uncover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This layer does not really affect the feel of the mattress too much, working mostly to give the pocketed coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After taking a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let’s discuss their different feels and firmness levels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness of the Helix will differ widely depending on the version you pick out. The Helix Midnight and Dusk, have moderate firmness levels, which will be quite versatile and thus best-selling. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep would be happy to oblige you with more options.

Lying down on the Helix Midnight, the memory foam comfort layer is soft and produces some top quality body shaping, while the other materials within the Midnight work to counteract this and make an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there is just enough good comfort material in the Helix Midnight to conform to your lower spine while supporting your whole back in a neutral position. For larger buyers or those who prefer a firmer bed, there are 2 more options for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn models.

Majority of side sleepers should feel perfectly comfortable on the Midnight, but, if you are needing less pressure while still going with a flexible medium firmness, you may want to check out the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Side sleepers typically need to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most their weight on a tinier region. People who are smaller than average or those looking for plenty of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher models.

Stomach sleepers should feel comfortable in the Midnight, particularly if this isn’t their primary position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer choices might be preferable for exclusive stomach sleepers so they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their back.

Finally, the manufacturer suggests Helix mattresses for sleepers up to 350 pounds or partners that weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. If you or your partner are substantially bigger than average, the company has also produced a mattress called the Nightfall that’s constructed to accommodate a total weight of 1000 lbs.

Couples with differing types of bodies or tastes may also pick a dual comfort model that combines Firm with Plush.

Bear in mind that if neither of those options sound quite right, you can always have a look at the 4 other beds in the new collection: the Sunset (plush, softer than the Moonlight), Dusk (moderate feel, slightly firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, made for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest variant in the collection).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that is noticeable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this will be crucial for many buyers, those who doze with a partner may find it particularly intriguing as it will illuminate just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Carnival Helix 9 Spa Balcony Room

According to my research, Helix Sleep exceeds expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space because of the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the pocketed coils that help trap motion at its source. If you are a light sleeper worried that movement from the other side of the mattress will bother you, then you shouldn’t have much concern with this mattress. I’d say that all of the Helix mattresses are a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While purchasing a new mattress, most people wish to know whether they will feel as though they are sinking “into” the it or laying “on top” of it.

While you’re going to encounter a little immediate sinkage from the soft foam on top, when you sink through those layers, you’ll find the pocketed coils and experience fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a wide range of individuals, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers the most.

Edge Support

Though I do feel the memory foam compress as I sit close to the edge of the bed, the individually-wrapped coils prevent the mattress from compressing a lot beyond that. I feel very secured seated on the bed.

In my opinion, Helix mattresses are well above average for edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, which is due to their recently updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There can be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with your entire weight on the side, but laying on the side should feel comfortable and safe. Partners who want more space to stretch out normally love strong edges.

Lying down, I also feel like I could get close to the edge of the bed without feeling like I’ll fall off or be ejected from the bed. Overall, I believe that the Helix mattress has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of purchasing a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually include. Helix Sleep is not any different. You customize the mattress that’s made for you, place your order, and in two weeks, it’s delivered to your home. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you have 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it isn’t perfect, you can return it for free, and receive a full refund.

Should you return the mattress, it isn’t restocked or resold. In fact, the company locates a local place to donate it. If there is no way Helix can find a way to donate your refunded mattress, it is recycled instead. Carnival Helix 9 Spa Balcony Room

Helix Warranty

The Helix Mattress includes a generous 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it has some limitations, exceptions, and the burden of proof is on the customer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you should be the first owner of the mattress to use the guarantee, and you need to be sure that you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

As long as you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty should be valid. That means you will need to use a suitable foundation (no adjustable bed frames or slats more than 4” apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on the bed!

If your mattress starts to have an indentation of 1 inch or longer, which is what typically happens when low-density foams break down, you could qualify for a repair or replacement of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it is suggested that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excess sagging.

For regular cleaning, it is suggested to use cold water along gentle dish detergent to clean any stains or dirt. Make certain to clean using gentle circular movements, instead of rubbing.
