Helix Sleep markets hybrid mattresses manufactured with dual-layer covers, polyfoam comfort systems, and pocketed coil support cores reinforced with polyfoam base layers. Ascaso Helix White

Helix Sleep allows complete mattress customization. Customers are asked to complete a questionnaire that discusses their height, weight, firmness preferences, sleep position, and other factors. Then based on these results, Helix Sleep will recommend one of the following six mattress variants; each respective variant offers a one-of-a-kind combination of support and firmness:

  • Helix Sunset: ‘Soft’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Moonlight: ‘Soft’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support
  • Helix Midnight: ‘Medium’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dusk: ‘Medium’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and additional support
  • Helix Twilight: ‘Firm’ firmness, targeted cushioning, and balanced support
  • Helix Dawn: ‘Firm’ firmness, moderate cushioning, and extra support

Helix Sleep hybrids with targeted cushioning conform closely, which makes them optimal for side sleepers. While those that have moderate cushioning do not conform as much and are suitable for pretty much all sleep positions. Lighter people may feel most comfy on models with balanced support, while those that weigh 130 pounds or more often prefer the models with extra support.

Helix Sleep also offers two mattresses with dual-firmness, the Helix Dual Balanced (with balanced support and targeted cushioning) and the Helix Dual Extra (with additional support and moderate cushioning). Both these models have one ‘Firm’ side and one ‘Soft’ side, which makes them ideal for couples with differing tastes. Lastly, the Helix Nightfall is a hybrid designed for larger, heavier people. This mattress has an additional layer of memory foam for maximum support.

My review of Helix Sleep mattresses found that the customizable selection conforms to sleepers with a wide range of firmness preferences and body types. The mattresses also have strong edge support, isolate movement well, and create less noise than the average hybrid. Ascaso Helix White

Construction Ascaso Helix White

All 9 of the various iterations of the mattress will differ slightly in construction, but for 6 of the 9 models, the construction should be fairly similar. The six core variants (listed above) are 10 inches tall, made up of 6 inches of pocketed coils and 4 inches of foam.

Helix mattresses vary in density and firmness depending upon the foams used in order to get more/less firmness and more/less support. The four different foams utilized within Helix mattresses are high-grade polyurethane foam, memory foam, Helix Dynamic Foam, and a DuraDense Foam (aka support foam). Not all the variants have all of the foams – some only have three of the four – but it really shouldn’t matter much for the purchaser. The foams are just levers that Helix Sleep can pull to be able to offer 9 different models (and hopefully have a mattress for everyone). Ascaso Helix White

Underneath, I briefly talk about the construction (materials and quality) of the average Helix mattress, the Helix Midnight.

Cover – Originally, all Helix mattresses come with exactly the same cover, made of 100% polyester. I thought it to be thin and stretchy, allowing for some great breathability. But, if you would like something more lavish, you can opt to swap out the regular cover for the brand’s UltraCool one, which is composed of a phase change fabric to regulate temperature.

Comfort Layer – Up top, you’ll find a thick layer of memory foam. This material has a slow reaction to pressure, meaning you’re probably going to experience some gratifying body shaping. Even though it may seem odd for a purportedly medium firm bed to feature a memory foam layer, it is important to remember that the existence of deep sinkage doesn’t always translate to softness; in actuality, most of the time it produces quite a firm feel.

Transition Layer – After getting past the comfort layer, you will uncover a transition layer of poly foam. This layer works to curb the sinkage of the memory foam and create a supportive, medium firm feel as you hit the individually wrapped coils underneath.

Support Layer – Most of the mattress consists of this section of individually wrapped coils. This system brings a supportive lift to the construction, working to put the sleeper “on top” of the mattress, instead of “in it”. Since these coils are individually wrapped, they’re also likely to encourage extra breathability as air flows through the spaces in the coils.

Base Layer – Lastly, you will uncover a thin segment of high-density poly foam. This section doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much, functioning mostly to give the individually wrapped coils something off of which to respond.

Firmness and Support

After having a look at the construction of the Helix mattresses, let us discuss their different firmness levels and feels.

helix-mattress-firmness-and-support-scale

The firmness level of the Helix is going to differ widely depending on the version you select. The Helix Dusk and Midnight, have medium firmness levels, which tends to be very versatile and therefore very popular. If you have more specific requirements, however, Helix Sleep will be happy to provide you with more options.

Lying down on the Midnight, the uppermost foam layer feels soft and produces some high quality body shaping, while the rest of the materials within the Midnight work to control this and make an overall firmer composition. The firmer support foams and individually-wrapped coils also help with re-positioning.

For those who sleep on their back, there’s just enough good comfort material in the Midnight to conform to your lumbar while supporting your back in a neutral position. For larger buyers or those who want a firmer mattress, there are 2 more choices for you in the Helix Twilight and Helix Dawn variants.

Many side sleepers will feel totally comfy on the Midnight, but, if you are needing less pressure while still sticking with a flexible medium firmness, you might decide to take a look at the Helix Dusk, which utilizes a body-conforming latex-alternative foam that is breathable and provides the surface a small bit of bounce.

Those who sleep on their side typically need to be mindful of pressure because they sleep with most of their weight on a smaller region. People who are smaller than average or those in the market for lots of pressure relief might want to stay with the plusher variants.

Those who sleep on their stomach should feel supported in the Midnight, particularly if this is not their main position or they tend to change things up a lot. Firmer mattresses may be preferable for exclusive tummy sleepers so that they can ensure their hips do not dip and over-arch their backbone.

Last, the manufacturer recommends Helix for sleepers up to 350 pounds or partners that weigh a maximum of 250 lbs each. If you or your spouse are significantly bigger than average, Helix has also created a mattress called the Nightfall that’s created to accommodate a combined weight of 1000 pounds.

Partners with differing types of bodies or preferences can also select a dual comfort variant that combines Firm with Plush.

Keep in mind that if none of these options feel right, you can always have a look at the 4 other models in the newest collection: the Sunset (plush, softer compared to the Moonlight), Dusk (medium feel, a little firmer than the Midnight), Twilight (firm, designed for side sleepers), or Dawn (the firmest option of the bunch).

Motion Transfer

Next up, let us talk about motion transfer, or the amount of activity that’s noticeable from one side of the mattress to the other. While this is going to be important for all buyers, those who doze with a spouse may find it particularly intriguing as it will show just how bothered you may be by your partner’s nighttime movements. Ascaso Helix White

Based on my observation, Helix Sleep surpasses expectations for hybrid mattresses in this space due to the amount and quality of foam it incorporates, as well as the pocketed coils which help trap motion at its source. If you’re a light sleeper afraid that motion from the opposite side of the bed will wake you, you shouldn’t have a lot of concern with this hybrid. I would say that any of the Helix mattresses would be a good option for couples.

Sinkage

While purchasing a brand-new mattress, most people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking “into” the mattress or laying “on top” of it.

Even though you’re going to encounter some immediate sinkage in the uppermost foam layers, when you sink through those layers, you’ll reach the pocketed coils and find fantastic support. This combination will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular.

Edge Support

While I do feel the memory foam collapse as I sit close to the edge of the mattress, the individually-wrapped coils stop the mattress from compressing a lot . I feel quite secure sitting on the bed.

In my view, Helix mattresses are well above average when it comes to edge support compared to other bed-in-a-box brands, and this is because of their freshly updated edges containing reinforcement in the coil unit. There may be some compression at the comfort foams when you sit with all your weight on the side, but laying on the side will feel comfy and secure. Couples who need more space to stretch out normally love stronger edges.

Lying down, I feel like I could get near the edge of the bed without feeling like I will fall off or be ejected from the mattress. Overall, I believe the Helix has nice edge support.

100 Night Sleep Trial

Among the best features of buying a bed-in-a-box online is the sleep trials that they usually come with. Helix is no different. You customize the mattress that is intended for you, place your order, and within two weeks, it is sent to your home. From the minute you click to purchase the mattress, you’ve got 100 nights to test it out (minus the time for delivery, so it’s more like 90 nights). If it is not perfect, you can return it free of charge, and get a complete refund.

If you do return the mattress, it is not resold or restocked. Actually, Helix does its best to find a local place to donate it. If there’s no way Helix Sleep can find a way to donate your returned mattress, it’s recycled instead. Ascaso Helix White

Helix Warranty

Helix offers an amazing 10-year warranty that covers flaws, but it has limitations, exceptions, while the burden of proof is on the consumer (like most warranties). Needless to say, you should be the original owner of the Helix to use the warranty, and you will need to be sure you keep your receipt as proof of purchase.

Provided that you follow all the manufacturer’s expectations for use, your warranty is valid. That means you will need to have a proper base (no adjustable bed frames or slats over 4 inches apart) and that you don’t use the mattress improperly – no jumping on it!

If your Helix starts to have an indentation of 1” or longer, something that typically happens when low-density foams break down, then you could be eligible for a replacement or repair of your mattress.

What’s The Best Way To Care For Your Helix?

Helix mattresses require no turning, but it is recommended that you rotate the mattress possibly once or twice a year to keep it from wearing down from excessive sagging.

For regular cleanup, it’s advised to use cold water along gentle dish soap to clean any dirt or stains. Be certain that you clean using soft circular movements, instead of rubbing.
